When we think of cancer, we often think of an elderly person. But did you know that cancer is a disease that knows no age? Today I am going to tell you the story of a person who unexpectedly, at a young age, faced colon cancer and overcame that challenge. This is not just a story, it is a lesson that teaches us a lot about life, about health, and about doctors.
The protagonist of this story is 16 years old. To be exact, he is diagnosed with colon cancer 8 days after his 16th birthday.
How it all began
It was 1987. One day, he noticed that there were blood stains on his underwear. This was a strange and scary thing for a school-age child. Later, while doing laundry, his mother noticed it too. Without any delay, his mother took him from school and went straight to see a doctor. The doctor immediately referred them to the hospital for some necessary tests.
The news that came after the test results came back was terrible. The doctors told his parents that even with radiation and chemotherapy, he wouldn't live past Christmas. That would be three months. But in the middle of all that, on September 21st, he underwent surgery. It was 12 hours long. Amazingly, he was even woken up during the surgery! The doctors removed the tumor at the end of his colon. But surprisingly, the cancer cells hadn't spread to other parts of his body, as they had expected.
When the new test results came back after the surgery, the results were completely different. The doctors said he didn't need radiation or chemotherapy because the remaining cancer had disappeared. From that day on, he became known as the "Miracle Kid."
What are the warning signs of colon cancer?
The most important thing we should learn from this story is not to ignore the signals our body gives us. The first symptom we saw in this story was blood in the stool. There are other symptoms like this. Let's see what they are.
Important: If you have one or more of these symptoms, it does not necessarily mean you have cancer. It could be another condition, such as hemorrhoids. However, never ignore these symptoms. See your doctor as soon as possible for advice.
| Symptom | A simple explanation |
|---|---|
| Change in bowel habits | Persistent diarrhea, constipation, or change in stool consistency. |
| Blood in the stool | Dark stools or blood streaked stools (this was the main symptom in the story). |
| Stomach pain or discomfort | Persistent discomfort such as bloating, stomach cramps, and feeling full. |
| Weight loss for no reason | Unimaginable weight loss without dieting or exercise. |
| Frequent fatigue | Extreme fatigue and weakness that does not go away even with rest. |
Colostomy surgery and a new life
Because the cancer was close to the rectum, it damaged the muscles in that area. As a result, doctors had to perform a surgery called a colostomy .
What is this colostomy?
Simply put, this involves removing part of the large intestine and creating a separate opening in the abdomen (belly) for the stool to pass through. A special bag is attached to this opening to collect the stool. Many people are scared when they hear about this. They think, "Oh, can I live like that?"
That was the biggest question the young man in this story had after the surgery. "Will I ever find someone to love me like this? Will I ever meet someone who wants to have children with me?" These were the biggest fears in his mind.
Over time, he realized that some people think a lot about this condition, but for others it is not a problem at all. The important thing is that it is possible to live a normal, happy family life with this condition . All it takes is understanding and love.
The biggest lesson we can learn from this story is
This is the advice the person telling this story gives to everyone.
"Please take good care of your body. You can do that not only by eating well and avoiding smoking, but also by seeing your doctor regularly . By going regularly, you have the opportunity to find any problems early, before they become serious."
Recently, after many years, he went to see the same doctor who performed his surgery. Just to make sure everything was okay, he had some tests done. The results are in. His health is very good! There is nothing to worry about. But he knows that he needs to keep going for these check-ups.
He also told the doctor, "After you retire, I need to find another doctor who I can trust and rely on!"
Before he ends this story, he says something like this: "Thank you, Doctor, for everything. For giving me a chance to enjoy life. You will never know how much I owe you."
