How the little baby in the womb grows (Fetal Development): Amazing changes week by week!

Hello! If you are a mother-to-be, you are probably curious to know how your little one is growing inside your womb. It is hard to imagine how quickly and in what amazing ways this little life is changing. In this article, we will talk about how your baby develops in the womb week by week. It is like an amazing journey, and we will look at some of the important stops along the way.

Usually, we start counting the days of pregnancy from the day of your last menstrual period. That means the days start counting even before you know you're pregnant. Isn't that amazing?

First Trimester: The Beginning of a Little Life

This is when the most important things happen. Starting with a few small cells, all the organs gradually begin to form during this time. We call this the ``First Trimester``.

Weeks 1-4: Let's start with a small drop!

Just think, it is during these few weeks that the first foundations of your baby's life are laid. A sperm cell joins with one of your eggs, that is, it is fertilized, and a small ball of cells is formed. We call this a ``Zygote``. Then this ball of cells divides rapidly and implants itself in the wall of the uterus. This is called ``Implantation``. You may not even know that you are pregnant yet!

This tiny ball of cells contains all the `(DNA)` (Deoxyribonucleic Acid) information that your baby's entire body needs to grow. To be precise, everything from the baby's eye color, hair color, and height is determined during this small period. It is during this time that the `(Placenta)`, that is, the placenta and the `(Umbilical cord), begin to develop. This `(Placenta)` is like a bridge that carries food, drink, and oxygen to the baby.

The folic acid pills you take during these first few weeks are very important because they help the neural tube, which forms the basis of the baby's brain and spinal cord, develop properly.

Weeks 5-8: The heart starts beating!

Your baby is now called an ``Embryo''. It is during this time that organs begin to develop at an incredible rate . Can you imagine, at about 5 or 6 weeks, your baby's little heart starts beating! You may even be able to hear this little heartbeat during an ``Ultrasound scan.'' It is an amazing joy for a mother.

Things like the brain, spine, and the rudiments of limbs are forming during this time. Even things like the eyes, ears, and nose on the face are starting to take shape. To be precise, the basic blueprint of a little human is being created during this time. By now, the baby is about the size of a grapefruit.

Weeks 9-12: A little human is taking shape!

Now your `(Embryo)` is becoming a `(Fetus)`. By now , almost all of the baby's major organs have formed . You can clearly see the hands, feet, and fingers. Even the nails are starting to form.

The baby is now starting to move around inside the womb, but you may not feel it yet. The movements are very subtle. The baby's face is also starting to look human. The genitals are also starting to develop at this time, but it will take a few days to know for sure with an `(Ultrasound scan)`. By the end of these first three months, your baby will be approximately 7-8 centimeters long and weigh about 25-30 grams.

Second Trimester: Amazing baby growth!

This is the time when many mothers start to feel a little better about their pregnancy. Morning sickness subsides, and they feel a little more energetic. The baby also grows quickly during this time. We call this the ``Second Trimester''.

Weeks 13-16: Now you can feel it too!

Your baby is getting bigger now. The bones are starting to get stronger, and the bones are getting thicker. Surprisingly, the baby can have cramps during this time! Also, some mothers start to feel the baby's movements (`Quickening`) from these weeks. At first, it feels subtle, like butterflies moving around in the stomach, but later it becomes more noticeable.

Your baby is now moving his limbs, opening and closing his mouth, and maybe even sucking his thumb. All of this can be seen with an ultrasound scan.

Weeks 17-20: Little mischievous one!

By this time , almost all of the baby's organs are well developed . Eyebrows, eyelashes, and even hair are starting to appear. The baby's skin is covered in a white, thick coating called `(Vernix caseosa). This is to protect the skin as the baby is in the water called `(Amniotic fluid)` in the womb.

It is during this time that an ``Anomaly scan'' is often done. It checks for any problems with the baby's development and organs. Also, this ``(scan)'' can largely determine whether the baby is a girl or a boy . The baby is now approximately 25 centimeters long.

Weeks 21-24: Starting to hear and see the world!

Your baby can hear sounds well now. When you talk and sing, your baby can hear those sounds. So it's great to talk and sing to your baby. Even though your baby's eyes are developed, they still don't have full vision. But they can respond to light.

The baby's lungs are also developing, but they are not yet fully developed. At this time, the baby's skin is red and slightly translucent, because the layer of fat under the skin is not yet fully developed.

Weeks 25-28: Gaining weight and getting stronger!

Now your baby is starting to gain weight . Also, a specific pattern of sleeping and waking up is starting to form. The baby's brain is also developing rapidly. A substance called `(Surfactant)` is starting to form in the lungs. This is very important, because it is this `(Surfactant)` that helps the lungs to breathe on their own after the baby is born.

By the end of the second trimester, your baby will weigh about 1 kilogram and be about 35-38 centimeters long. If the baby is born during this time, there is a chance that he will survive with special medical care (Neonatal Intensive Care).

Third Trimester: Ready to enter the world!

This is the last stage of pregnancy. The baby is now almost fully developed and ready to come into the world. You may also feel a little tired now, because the baby is big. We call this the `(Third Trimester)`.

Weeks 29-32: Brain is working hard!

Your baby's brain is developing at an incredible rate during this time . He can open and close his eyes, and can detect light. His bones are fully developed, but they are still a little soft. This will make it easier to come out during labor.

The baby's body fat is also developing well now. This will help regulate body temperature after birth. You should be able to feel the baby's movements very well now.

Weeks 33-36: Lungs are ready!

At this time, the baby's lungs are almost fully developed . This means that the baby is now able to breathe on its own when it comes out of the womb. The baby's skin is now smooth and pink. The covering of the vernix caseosa is starting to gradually disappear.

Most of the time, during these weeks, the baby turns head down, ready for delivery . Doctors check this with a ``(scan)''. The baby's nails have also grown all the way to the tips of their fingers.

Weeks 37-40: Can come anytime!

At 37 weeks, the baby is considered "full-term." This means that if the baby were born now, it would survive without any problems. All organs, including the lungs and brain, are now fully developed.

Your baby now weighs approximately 2.5 to 4 kilograms and is about 48-52 centimeters long. You can start labor at any time during these days, so it's best to be prepared for anything.

Remember, every baby develops a little differently. The numbers of weeks, weight, and length mentioned are just averages. Your doctor is the one who should tell you exactly what your and your baby's health is.

Some important things to remember

These nine months of a little life forming inside your womb are truly a miracle.

  • Eat a healthy diet: Your baby gets the nutrition he needs for his growth from you. Therefore, it is very important to eat fruits, vegetables, and nutritious foods.
  • Follow medical advice: Go to medical clinics on time, follow the instructions given exactly. Take things like folic acid and iron tablets properly.
  • Be happy: Your mental health also affects your baby. So try to stay happy and relaxed.
  • Talk to your baby: Your baby can hear your voice. So talking to your baby and singing songs is good for both of you.

This journey has been an amazing experience. We wish you and your little one a healthy and happy journey!
