Do flying ants come from swarms? Let's learn about these insects (Flying Ants)

You may have noticed that sometimes, especially after a light rain, a swarm of flying insects suddenly appears around the house. Some people get a little scared when they see these creatures circling around the light, thinking, "Oh, this is a swarm of termites, isn't it?" Many people confuse these flying ants with termites. But who are they really? Are they a nuisance to us? Are their bites dangerous? Today, we will talk about these flying ants, or `(Flying Ants)`, in a very simple way.

Who really is this flying ant?

Simply put, flying ants are not a separate species. In the same species of ants we all know, only a group of sexually mature individuals acquire these wings. These are also called `(alates)`.

Imagine an anthill as a big kingdom. There are different groups of ants that do different jobs. For example, ants that look for food, ants that take care of eggs, ants that protect the queen. Among them, the flying ants are the ones that are responsible for building new kingdoms, that is, new anthills. This group consists of sexually mature males and future queens. Their only goal is to fly out of their nest and start a new family in a new place.

There are four stages in the life cycle of these ants: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. They only get their wings when they are adults. They are usually black or brown in color. Queen ants are slightly larger than males.

Flying ants? Wasps? How do we know for sure?

This is the biggest problem that many people have. Because woodworms are a type of animal that causes great damage to the wooden furniture in our homes. Therefore, it is very important to distinguish and identify these two.

Keep in mind, flying ants and termites are two completely different animals. They can be easily distinguished by the small differences in their bodies.

Look at the table below and you will clearly understand this difference.

Body feature Flying Ants Flying termites
Waist The waist area is very thin and clearly visible (like a wasp). There is no waist. The body is straight and fat.
Wings There are two pairs of wings. The front pair of wings is larger than the back pair. Both pairs of wings are the same size .
Antennae The tangent is bent (elbowed) like an elbow. The contact beads are straight , as if attached.

What health risks do these animals pose to us?

The good news is that flying ants are generally not dangerous to humans . Their main purpose is to build a new nest, not to attack people. Therefore, they are not aggressive.

But, there are a few things we need to remember:

1. Bites and Poisoning: If they feel threatened, they can bite or sting to defend themselves. This usually causes minor redness, itching, and swelling. However, some types of ants (e.g. fire ants) can be a bit more painful when bitten by flying creatures.

2. Allergies: This is the one we need to be most concerned about. Some people can have severe allergies to ant venom. After being bitten by an ant,

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Swelling of the face, lips, or throat
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Rash all over the body

If symptoms such as: appear, it could be a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) , which is a condition that requires emergency medical treatment.

3. Damage to property: Some types of ants, especially carpenter ants, can damage damp wood in homes. They make burrows inside the wood. If this happens over a long period of time, it can even damage the structure of the building.

What to do if you get bitten by a flying ant?

Don't panic at first. Most of the time, this is just a minor thing. Here are some things you can do.

For a minor reaction:

  • First, clean the bite area thoroughly with soap and water.
  • Apply an ice pack for about 10-15 minutes to reduce swelling and pain.
  • If you have itching, you can ask your doctor about taking an antihistamine pill.
  • You can use a painkiller like paracetamol for pain.
  • If the swelling and redness are severe, your doctor may prescribe a corticosteroid ointment.

What to do in case of a severe allergic reaction:

This is very important! If you experience symptoms such as difficulty breathing, facial swelling, or fainting after being bitten by an ant, go to the nearest hospital's Emergency Treatment Unit (ETU) without delay .

A severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) is treated with an injection called epinephrine. If you have already been diagnosed with such an allergic reaction, your doctor may have prescribed you an EpiPen and instructed you on how to use it. However, in such cases, it is essential to seek medical attention immediately.

How to save your home from these troublemakers?

If you see a swarm of flying ants in your home, it means there is a large anthill somewhere nearby. Here are some things you can do to control them and prevent them from coming back.

  • Control moisture: Repair any water leaks in your home (pipes, faucets, roof) as soon as possible. Keep areas like bathrooms and kitchens as dry as possible.
  • Keep food covered: Keep food, especially sugar and sweets, well covered and out of reach of ants.
  • Close the trash can: Keep the kitchen trash can tightly closed. Take out the trash daily.
  • Seal cracks: Seal small cracks and holes in your home's doors, windows, and walls. This will block the paths for ants to enter your home.
  • Find and destroy ant nests: Find out where the flying ants are coming from. Identify ant nests around the house and in the garden and apply an insecticide to them.
  • Professional help: If you have difficulty controlling an ant infestation, seek help from a professional pest control company.

Take-Home Message

  • If you develop severe allergic symptoms such as difficulty breathing and facial swelling after an ant sting, go to the nearest hospital's Emergency Department (ETU) immediately.
