Have you ever heard of a disease called Yersiniosis? The name may be new to you. But it is an infection that can occur among us, especially among young children. Simply put, it is a stomach disease caused by bacteria. Let's talk about it in more detail today, because it is very important for everyone to know how to protect themselves from it.
What is Yersiniosis?
Okay, let's start from the beginning. Yersiniosis is an infection . It's a condition where a germ, in this case a bacterium, enters our body. The specific type of bacteria that causes it is called Yersinia enterocolitica . It's a bit of a long name, isn't it? But it's easy to remember, and this is the main culprit.
This infection is most often contracted by humans from eating raw or undercooked pork . It can also be transmitted from other animals, such as rats, cows, sheep, rabbits, and horses. Rarely, pets, such as dogs and cats, can also transmit the bacteria. Young children are especially susceptible to Yersiniosis.
This infection causes fever, as well as gastrointestinal (GI) problems such as stomach cramps and diarrhea. Most of the time, this illness gets better without any special treatment. However, sometimes antibiotics are needed to kill the bacteria. Rarely, it can cause other health problems such as skin rashes and joint pain.
Who is more likely to develop this disease?
In fact, anyone can get Yersiniosis. However, as mentioned earlier, it is more common in young children than in adults . Also, if there are people who make "chitlins" (a dish made from pig intestines), they are more likely to get this infection. Not only that, but they are also more likely to spread it to others, especially young children in their homes.
How common is Yersiniosis?
Although we don't have exact statistics on how common it is in Sri Lanka, for example, in a country like the United States of America, it is said that nearly one hundred thousand people develop Yersiniosis every year. That means a lot of people suffer from it. Of these, nearly six hundred have to be hospitalized, and sometimes there are cases where about thirty-five people die from this infection every year. So, this is not something that can be taken lightly, is it?
Why do we get Yersiniosis? What are the causes?
We get this disease when the bacteria Yersinia enterocolitica enters our body through our mouths. That is, if we ingest the bacteria through food, drink, or dirty hands. Rarely, it can also be caused by receiving blood from an infected person through a blood transfusion.
Here are some ways you can get the bacteria:
- By drinking milk or water contaminated with bacteria.
- Eating food contaminated with bacteria (`(Food Poisoning)`) , especially raw or undercooked pork.
- By touching the feces of an infected person or animal (for example, if you do not wash your hands properly after removing pet feces).
- Raw pork, for example, by preparing things like those chitlins mentioned earlier and then putting your hands in your mouth before washing them . If you finish preparing raw pork and then touch someone else (or their belongings) without washing your hands, you can also infect them. Imagine what would happen if a mother was in the kitchen cutting pork and then picked up a small child without washing her hands.
- Yersinia enterocolitica is transmitted by touching a surface or object contaminated with the bacteria and then putting it in your mouth .
What are the symptoms of Yersiniosis?
Yersiniosis mainly causes problems in your digestive system (i.e., your intestines). Symptoms usually begin to appear four to seven days after the bacteria enter your body. These symptoms can last for up to three weeks.
Symptoms in young children:
- Stomach ache and limping.
- Diarrhea (often this can be bloody diarrhea ).
- Fever.
- Sore throat (Pharyngitis).
Symptoms in adults and young children:
Adults and older children often experience the same symptoms as younger children. However, they are more likely to experience pain on the right side of their abdomen . This is why some adults may mistake this for appendicitis (inflammation of the appendix). This is because right-sided abdominal pain is also a major symptom of appendicitis.
This is very important! You can spread the disease to others while you have diarrhea and for up to three months after the diarrhea has completely stopped. This means that other people can get the disease if they come into contact with your stool. Therefore, you should be very careful about washing your hands during this time to prevent spreading the disease to others.
How does a doctor diagnose this disease? (Diagnosis)
If you have these symptoms, it's best to see a doctor. The doctor will ask you about your symptoms and do a physical exam . Then, they will ask you to provide a stool sample and send it to a lab. That's where they will determine if you have the Yersinia enterocolitica bacteria.
What are the treatments for Yersiniosis?
The good news is that most cases of Yersiniosis get better without any special treatment . Your body's immune system will fight off the bacteria and kill it. However, it may take several weeks for the symptoms to completely disappear.
While you are recovering, you should drink plenty of fluids, such as water and juices, to avoid dehydration (loss of water in the body). This is especially important because diarrhea causes a lot of fluid loss from the body.
If your yersiniosis is severe, meaning your symptoms are very severe, your doctor may prescribe antibiotics to kill the bacteria.
How do we protect ourselves from Yersiniosis? (Prevention methods)
The best thing to do is to prevent this disease before it occurs. Let's see how we can protect ourselves from it. Here are some things to keep in mind:
- Avoid unpasteurized milk and dairy products: Always use only pasteurized milk, ice cream, and cheese. Pasteurization is a process that heats milk to kill most of the harmful bacteria in it. Therefore, these are safe to consume.
- Be careful with animal waste: If you have pets at home, be careful when disposing of their waste. Dispose of it in a separate, well-sealed container. Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling animal waste.
- Cook food thoroughly: Never eat raw pork or other raw meats. Always cook food, especially meats, thoroughly to a safe internal temperature. It is best if you can use a food thermometer for this.
- Avoid cross-contamination: This is very important. When preparing food, keep a separate cutting board for raw meats. Use a separate board for cutting vegetables and fruits. Keep raw meat away from other foods, especially uncooked foods like salads. Imagine what would happen if you cut lettuce on the same board with the same knife you used to cut pork. Bacteria from raw meat can transfer to other foods.
- Be especially careful when making things like pork intestines (chitlins): I don't know how common these are in Sri Lanka, but if you're making something like this, you need to be extra careful. When making these, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before touching anything else, and clean your fingernails thoroughly . Avoid touching small children or their toys or utensils while you're preparing food. When you're done, use a bleach solution (like Clorox) to thoroughly clean all surfaces you've used, including utensils, cutlery, and cutting boards. Let the bleach sit on the surfaces for a while, then wipe them off with paper towels.
- Make hand washing a habit - this is the most important thing!:
- After going to the toilet.
- After changing the baby's nappy.
- After playing with an animal.
- Before eating.
- Before cooking food.
- Before a small baby touches a bottle of milk or a bowl of soup.
- Especially if you've handled raw meat, you should definitely, definitely wash your hands thoroughly with soap.
What are the possible complications of Yersiniosis?
Complications from Yersiniosis are rare. Most of the time, symptoms resolve without treatment. However, in rare cases, the following may occur:
- Some people, especially women , may develop a skin rash on their stomach and legs. This usually appears a few days after the infection and goes away in about a month. It does not cause any long-term health problems.
- Very rarely, a condition called reactive arthritis can develop about four weeks after infection with yersiniosis. This causes pain and swelling in joints such as the wrists, knees, and ankles. These symptoms can take up to six months to improve.
- Even more rarely, but very dangerously, this bacterial infection can enter the bloodstream . If this happens, a serious, life-threatening condition called sepsis can occur.
When should you see a doctor about Yersiniosis?
If you or your child have any symptoms that you think could be Yersiniosis, be sure to see a doctor for advice. It is important to find out exactly what is causing these symptoms.
Seek medical attention immediately, especially if diarrhea or stomach cramps are severe.
Finally, remember (Take-Home Message)
Yersiniosis is a bacterial infection that can be spread mainly by eating raw or undercooked pork or by contaminated food. It can be very painful for you or your child if you get it.
However, there are things we can do to avoid this:
- Always keep your hands clean , especially before and after preparing food, after using the toilet, and after touching animals.
- Be careful when removing animal feces.
- Cook pork and other meats well.
- If you're making things like chitlins, think twice about food safety. It's best to leave it to someone else to watch the little ones. Clean everything you use thoroughly.
By following these simple steps, you and your family can go a long way in protecting yourself from these types of infections. Stay healthy!
