South Asian Anthropometric Cutoffs (BMI ≥ 23.0 kg/m²) and Early Cardiometabolic Screening in Sri Lankan Primary Care

Abstract (English)

South Asian populations, including Sri Lankans, exhibit higher visceral adiposity and insulin resistance at lower Body Mass Index (BMI) levels compared to European cohorts. Applying the standard international overweight threshold of 25.0 kg/m² delays early lifestyle and glycemic screening in Sri Lankan adults. This clinical review summarizes WHO Asia-Pacific and Sri Lanka Ministry of Health guidelines recommending overweight classification at BMI ≥ 23.0 kg/m² and obesity at BMI ≥ 25.0 kg/m², alongside waist circumference thresholds of ≥ 90 cm in men and ≥ 80 cm in women.

(Sinhala Abstract)
