Imagine hearing that someone in your office or a close friend has contracted COVID -19 . Two days ago, you were sitting with that person and talking. Now you feel a little scared, don't you? You think, "Oh, I don't know if I'll get it too." At times like these, one thing we all need to know is the "Incubation Period." Let's talk about this simply today.
First of all, what is this 'Incubation Period'?
Simply put, the incubation period is the time it takes for a virus or bacteria to enter our body and cause symptoms. Think about it, this is the time it takes for the virus to enter the body, multiply inside the body, and start affecting our body . Doctors and health officials use this time to decide how long people should stay away from others (quarantine) when a virus is spreading. This time varies from disease to disease.
So what is the incubation period of Covid-19?
The Covid-19 virus is constantly changing over time. We call these new mutations `(variants)`. The `Incubation Period` of each of these variants may also be different from each other.
When we first looked at the first strain of the virus that emerged during the early stages of the Covid pandemic, the average time it took for symptoms to appear was about 5.6 days . That means that symptoms started to appear 5 to 6 days after being exposed to the virus. However, some people could develop symptoms as early as 2 days.
Most people have symptoms by day 12. By day 14, almost everyone with symptoms has developed them. Very rarely, about one in 100 people may develop symptoms even after 14 days.
And there's something else to remember. Some people get COVID and don't show any symptoms . Others have symptoms so mild that they don't even realize they have the disease.
What is the difference in the Omicron variant?
The `` Omicron '' variant, which once spread rapidly around the world , has a significantly shorter ``incubation period'' than other variants.. It usually takes about 3 days. While previous variants took 4-5 days, if Omicron develops, symptoms start to appear much faster. That means the time you can spread the virus starts sooner.
This is because the `Omicron` variant has the ability to multiply very quickly inside the body and produce a large amount of virus. That is why it spread more than twice as fast as other variants.
But the good news is that if you get the vaccine and the booster shot, you will be greatly protected from getting seriously ill, having to be hospitalized, and dying, even if a variant like Omicron develops.
When is the virus most contagious?
Here's the most important thing we all need to be aware of. According to researchers, a person infected with COVID-19 can spread the virus to others 2-3 days before symptoms appear .

This means that you can still spread the virus to someone else even when you don't feel sick. In variants with a short incubation period, such as Omicron, this contagious period may start even sooner.
How long can you transmit the virus?
Typically, if you have a mild or moderate case of the disease, you can spread the virus to someone else for about 10 days from the first day of symptoms.
But if you become seriously ill with COVID, you can still spread the virus up to 20 days after symptoms start.
Can I still get/spread the disease after getting the vaccine?
Yes, it can. When we get a Covid vaccine, it teaches our immune system to recognize the virus and fight it. Vaccines significantly reduce your risk of getting the virus.
But if you still get the virus after getting the vaccine (we call this a ``breakthrough infection''), the vaccine will protect you from getting seriously ill and having to be hospitalized.
The important thing is that you won't get full protection until about two weeks after getting both doses of the vaccine. This is because it takes about two weeks for the body to build up this protection. Since the ``Incubation Period`` is shorter than this time, you can still be infected with the virus while you're getting the vaccine or even a few days after getting it. By then, your body hasn't had enough time to build up immunity.
How should you quarantine?

What do you do if you get sick/test positive during quarantine?
If you develop symptoms of COVID or test positive, you should immediately isolate yourself from others in your household. If possible, stay in a separate room and use a separate bathroom. The current recommendation for asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic people is 5 days of isolation.. After that, wear a mask around others for another 5 days. If you feel any discomfort, call your doctor immediately.
