You know that we have a network of blood vessels spread throughout our bodies. These are like roads that run across a country. Some are like big highways, others are like small side roads. But in this system of veins, most people have only one, a little special, and a very important vein. Today we're talking about this vein that most people have never heard of called the Azygos vein.
Simply put, what is the Azygos Vein?
Imagine this is a major vein that runs up the right side of your chest, very close to your spine. To be precise, it's located inside your chest cavity (thorax). This vein plays a very important role in our body's circulatory system.
Its main function is to collect oxygen-depleted, or "dirty" blood from the back of your chest and abdomen and carry it to the heart. Before going to the heart, this blood is collected in the superior vena cava, one of the largest veins in our body. From there, the blood goes to the right atrium of the heart. After going to the heart, the blood is filled with oxygen again, "cleaned" and begins to circulate throughout the body.
The azygos vein system is a bit of a big story!
This Azygos vein is not a single vein. It is like the head of a whole system `(azygous venous system)`. There are several other small veins in this system. The most important thing about this system is that it acts as an additional connection, or a 'bypass' route, between the two largest veins in our body, the `inferior vena cava` (the main vein that carries blood from the lower side) and the `superior vena cava` (the main vein that carries blood from the upper side).
Imagine that both main roads leading to Colombo were blocked by traffic. How valuable would it be if there was another bypass for vehicles to use? That's how this system is. If one of those two main arteries gets blocked or obstructed in some way, blood can flow to the heart through this Azygos system. In medicine, we call this ``anastomosis``.
Let's take a look at the other two main members of this system.
| Name of the vein | A simple explanation |
|---|---|
| Accessory hemiazygos vein | It starts in the spaces between your ribs, runs up the left side of your spine, and eventually drains into the azygos vein. |
| Hemiazygos vein | This is formed by the joining of several other small veins, such as the veins in the spine and the veins under the ribs. This vein also eventually collects blood into the Azygos vein. |
Simply put, these two small veins are like two small rivers. Both of these rivers flow and join together into a large river called Azygos. Then that large river goes and joins together into a large ocean called the `superior vena cava`.
How is this vein different from other veins?
Here's the special thing. Normally, veins in our body are arranged in pairs . That means if there is a vein on the right side, there is also one on the left. But the arrangement of the azygos vein is a little different. Most people only have one azygos vein on the right side. It is alone. But very rarely, some people can develop two azygos veins while growing in the mother's womb. That is a normal condition.
So how big is this?
This vein is usually about 1 centimeter in diameter. To put it simply, it's about the size of a AAA battery that we use in flashlights and remote controls.
What is this vein made of?
Like other veins, this one is like a flexible tube with a wall made up of three layers.
- The innermost layer: This is made up of a type of cell called endothelial cells. These produce chemicals that help the blood vessels contract and dilate.
- Middle layer: This is made up of smooth muscle. This allows the vein to be very flexible.
- The outermost layer: This is made up of connective tissues called `(collagen)` and `(elastin).` This gives the vein strength and elasticity.
What are the problems and conditions that affect the azygos vein?
Usually, we rarely have problems with this vein in our daily lives. However, there are some cases where it can be damaged or its function can change.
1. Enlargement or swelling of the vein: If the flow of blood is obstructed due to some kind of increase in blood pressure or an obstruction within the vein, the azygos vein can become enlarged or swollen.
2. Injury: In serious accidents, especially in car accidents, falls from heights, or blows to the chest while playing sports, this vein can be lacerated or ruptured. This is a very dangerous condition.
3. Damage during surgery: Some thoracic surgeries can damage this vein. Also, complications from devices such as pacemakers implanted in the heart can affect this vein.
In such cases, blood pressure in the veins can increase or decrease excessively.
Tests to find out if there is a problem
If your doctor suspects a problem with this vein, he or she may recommend various tests to confirm it.
| Name of the test | What is happening? |
|---|---|
| Arteriogram or Venogram | A special dye is injected into the veins and a series of X-ray images are taken. This allows the blood to flow clearly. |
| Chest X-ray | This can give you a rough idea if there is a big difference in the shape or size of the vein. |
| CT scan | This allows for more detailed, three-dimensional images of the organs and veins inside the chest. |
| MRI scan (MRI) | This allows very clear images of the body's soft tissues and veins. |
How do you treat damage?
If this vein is damaged by some accident or other cause and starts bleeding, doctors will take immediate action. They may need to open the chest and perform a surgical procedure (thoracotomy) to relieve pressure on the chest and remove the accumulated blood.
Some people are born with certain congenital defects in this vein. Such people may be at risk of developing conditions related to the spleen or congenital heart disease. However, these are very rare.
What can you do to keep your nervous system healthy?
These habits will help you a lot to keep not only the azygos vein, but your entire circulatory system healthy.
- Eat a good nutritious diet. Reduce foods high in oil, salt, and sugar as much as possible.
- Exercise regularly. Even something as simple as walking for 30 minutes a day is enough.
- Drink enough water. It is very important to drink at least 2-3 liters of water a day.
- If you have high blood pressure, control it well. Take the medication prescribed by your doctor on time.
- If you smoke, quit today. Smoking is the biggest damage you can do to your arteries.
The azygos vein is a silent but very important hero in our body. If you have any further questions about it, or if you have any concerns about your health, the best person to talk to is your family doctor.
Take-Home Message
- The azygos vein is a major vein that runs along the right side of your chest, near your spine.
- Its main function is to carry oxygen-poor blood from the back of the chest and abdomen to the heart.
- If the main vein becomes blocked, this venous system acts as an additional route (bypass) for blood to flow.
- This vein can be damaged in serious accidents, so it is important to seek medical advice for any severe blow to the chest.
- Following a healthy lifestyle is the best way to keep all your veins healthy.
