What is this earache?
Simply put, `(Otalgia)` refers to pain in the ear or earlobe. This pain can be in one ear only, or it can occur in both ears at once. Some people experience a sharp pain like a knife stabbing. Others feel a heaviness or pressure inside the ear. Sometimes this goes away after a while, but sometimes it can last for hours or even days. Strictly speaking, earache is a symptom, not a disease. That is, this pain is caused by some underlying cause. Why do we get earaches? What are the causes?
There can be a number of reasons why an earache occurs. Let's look at some of the main causes.1. Ear Infections
This is the most common cause of earaches, especially among young children. There are two main types of ear infections:- Middle ear infection ( Otitis Media ): This is an infection of the middle ear, which is behind the eardrum. When you have a cold or a sore throat, fluids like mucus can accumulate in the middle ear, causing germs to grow and cause an infection. This is when you experience severe ear pain and sometimes a fever. When babies get this, they may rub their ears, cry, or refuse to drink milk.
- Outer Ear Infection (Otitis Externa) - "Swimmer's Ear": This is an infection of the ear canal, which is the part of the ear that extends from the ear canal to the eardrum . Frequent bathing, especially in swimming pools, rivers, and streams, can cause water to enter the ear, and the moisture can allow germs to grow and cause this infection. That's why it's also called "Swimmer's Ear." If the ear hurts when you touch it, or if there's a discharge coming out of the ear, this could be the cause.
2. Earwax Buildup / Cerumen Impaction
Earwax is a natural substance that forms inside our ears. It protects the eardrum from dust and dirt. But sometimes, this earwax can build up too much and become stuck. When we try to remove it with cotton buds, the wax gets pushed further in. This can cause a feeling of heaviness in the ear, pain, and sometimes even hearing loss.3. Changes in Air Pressure / Barotrauma
When you're on a plane, climbing a mountain, or diving, you suddenly feel a pain or a blockage in your ear, right? The reason for this is a condition called `(Barotrauma)`. Our middle ear is connected to the throat by a small tube called the `(Eustachian Tube).` This tube is what balances the air pressure inside and outside the ear. When the air pressure suddenly changes, if this tube does not work properly, pressure builds up on the eardrum and causes pain.4. Dental Problems
Imagine you have a large cavity in one of your teeth, or a problem with your wisdom tooth. The pain caused by dental problems like this can sometimes radiate to the ear and feel like an earache. This is called "referred pain." That is, the problem is in one place, but the pain is felt in another place.5. Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorders
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ), which is responsible for opening and closing our mouths and chewing food, is located very close to the ear. If there is a problem with this joint, such as arthritis or a tightening of the jaw muscles, it can also be felt as an earache.6. Foreign Objects in the Ear
This is something that parents of young children often face. A small piece of a toy, a bead, or a pea can get stuck in the child's ear. If that happens, it can cause severe pain in the ear and even an infection.7. Throat Infections
Earache can also be caused by things like a cold, a sore throat, or swollen tonsils. This is also referred pain, as mentioned earlier.8. Sinus Infections
When pressure in the sinus cavities increases, the pain can also affect the ears.Important: Don't assume that earaches are always caused by something simple. In rare cases, there may be more serious causes. So, don't ignore an earache.
When should you see a doctor for an earache?
A minor earache usually subsides in a day or two. However, if you have any of the following symptoms, you should definitely see a doctor:- If there is severe pain .
- If the pain lasts more than two days .
- If there is a fever (especially in young children).
- If there is fluid (such as pus or blood ) draining from the ear.
- If you experience hearing loss .
- If you experience dizziness or loss of balance .
- If there is swelling around the ear.
- If you suspect that something foreign is stuck in your ear.
- I have a headache. For a small child , it is best to see a doctor as soon as possible.
How do you find this, Doctor?
When you go to a doctor, they will first ask you questions. How long have you had the pain, what kind of pain it is, and whether you have any other symptoms. Then, they will use an instrument called an otoscope to look inside your ear. They can check for things like the condition of your eardrum, whether there is an infection in the ear canal, and whether there is earwax buildup. If necessary, they will also examine your throat, nose, and sinuses. Sometimes, they may also do a hearing test. What are the treatments for earache?
Treatment depends on the cause of the earache.Things you can do at home
- To reduce the pain, you can take a painkiller like `(Paracetamol)` or `(Ibuprofen)` (as directed by your doctor).
- You can place a water bottle over the ear to prevent heat build-up (some people also find relief from holding a cold water bottle).
- Sleep with your head elevated.
- In cases of `swimmer's ear`, avoid getting water in your ears.
Medical treatment
- If it is a bacterial infection, the doctor will prescribe antibiotics.
- Ear drops can be given (for infection, swelling, or to dissolve earwax).
- If earwax is stuck, it can be removed.
- If something foreign is stuck, it is carefully removed.
- If there is a problem with your teeth, you will be referred to a dentist.
What can we do to reduce earaches?
If you take care of a few things, you can reduce the risk of earaches:- Do not put anything inside your ear. Do not use cotton buds, hairpins, or keys to clean your ear. These can push earwax deeper and damage the eardrum.
- If water gets into your ear while bathing or swimming, tilt your head to the side and drain the water from your ear. Dry the ear thoroughly.
- If you have colds or allergies, control them.
- Avoid smoking. Inhaling secondhand smoke also increases the risk of ear infections in young children.
- When you're on a plane, climbing a mountain, yawn, or swallow something. Chewing gum is also good.
- Take care of your dental health. Get regular dental checkups.
Earaches in young children
When young children have an earache, they can't exactly say, "Oh, my ear hurts." However, we can recognize it by these symptoms:- They are always touching and pulling their ears.
- Crying more than usual and showing signs of anxiety.
- Fever.
- It's hard to sleep.
- It's like liquid is flowing from the ear.
- Decreases appetite and drinking.
- The body seems to be out of balance.
If a young child has these symptoms, see a doctor immediately.Because, if things like middle ear infections are not treated properly, they can also affect hearing.
Finally, things to remember (Take-Home Message)
Although earaches are a common occurrence for many people, they should not be ignored.- There are many causes of earache, so it's important to find the cause rather than just taking a painkiller.
- If you have any symptoms (severe pain, fever, ear discharge, hearing loss), be sure to see a doctor.
- Do not put anything in your ear without medical advice.
- Be especially careful about earaches in young children.
- Do not insert cotton buds into your ears as if they are cleaning your ears.
