Chromosomes are something that is connected to all of these, and are found in every tiny part of our bodies. Even though the name may sound like a big deal, don't worry, this is something that can be understood very simply. Let's talk about it today, just like talking to a friend.
What exactly are these cells? Let's start there!
Imagine your entire body as a big, beautiful house. This house is made of billions of tiny bricks. We can't see any of those bricks on their own, but when we put them together, we can make a big house. In the same way, our bodies are made of tiny, invisible parts. These are what we call cells . These cells are so small that we need a special instrument, a microscope, to see them.
These cells are found in our skin, heart, brain , eyes, and everywhere in our body. It's like every room and wall in a house is made of bricks. Each cell has its own specific job. Some cells come together to make the skin, and some come together to make the heart . Isn't it amazing?
So where are these chromosomes located? How do they look?
Okay, now we know about cells. I meant the tiny, brick-like parts of our bodies. Inside each cell, there is a very important place, like a small drawer or safe in a small room. That is what we scientifically call the nucleus . Simply put, it is the control center of the cell. Inside that nucleus, these so-called chromosomes are stored.
Do you know what these look like? They're like long, thread-like strands . Imagine a lot of very fine balls of thread, all tangled together, beautifully arranged. But aren't these just a tangle of threads? Inside these are stored a series of very valuable information and instructions that are relevant to our entire lives, to who we are.
What are the genes inside chromosomes?
Now we know that chromosomes are like threads inside cells. If you look at a single chromosome, there are hundreds, sometimes thousands, of even more important, smaller parts inside it. Those small parts are what we call genes .
Simply put, if a chromosome is a big book, genes are like chapters, or sentences, or words in that book. Each gene has a special instruction, or message, or information written for our body.
Think of genes as the steps in a recipe for a delicious meal. One gene tells you what color your eyes should be, another tells you whether your hair should be straight or curly, and another tells you how tall you should be. There are thousands of instructions like these inside these genes.
So what happens to these genes? Why do we need them?
These genes are the main thing that makes us 'us'. That means that many of our physical traits are determined by the instructions we receive from these genes. Take a look at these examples:
- The color of your eyes (blue, brown, black, gray).
- The color and texture of your hair (black, brown, blonde; straight, wavy, curly).
- The color of your skin .
- Whether you are tall or short is generally determined (of course, things like nutrition also play a role, but the basic plan is genetics).
- Even small things like whether your earplugs are plugged in or not .
- Your susceptibility to certain diseases , that is, whether you are more or less likely to develop certain diseases.
Thousands of things like this are determined by the instructions we receive from our genes. Like software on a computer, these genes tell our bodies how to behave and how to perform each task.
For example, imagine that your friend Kasun has light brown eyes like his mother. This is because Kasun has inherited the genes for light brown eyes from his mother. However, Kasun's hair may be dark black and curly like his father's. This is because he inherited the genes for it from his father. This is how we all inherit characteristics from our parents.
How many chromosomes do we have? Where do they come from?
This is a very important point. Normally, every cell in a healthy person (except for some special cell types, for example, sex cells) has 23 pairs of these chromosomes. A pair means there are two of them. So when you add them all up, there are 46 chromosomes.
Imagine you have 23 pairs of beautiful shoes. In each pair, one shoe comes from your mother and the other from your father. It's very simple, isn't it?
That means, of the 46 chromosomes you get, exactly half, that is, 23, come from your beloved mother . The other half, that is, the other 23 chromosomes, come from your beloved father . This happens when we are born, that is, when an egg cell from our mother and a sperm cell from our father come together.

We said that there are 23 pairs of chromosomes. Of these, 22 pairs are largely the same in both sexes. These are the ones that control all other physical characteristics (such as height, eye color, and skin color).
But the last, or 23rd, pair of chromosomes is a bit special. This pair determines whether a person is male or female. This is why doctors sometimes call these the sex chromosomes .
There are two types of these sex chromosomes. One is called the 'X' chromosome , and the other is called the 'Y' chromosome .
- If it's a girl , she has two X chromosomes. That's what we call XX . Of these two X chromosomes, one comes from the mother and the other from the father.
- If it's a boy , he has one X chromosome and one Y chromosome. That's what we call XY . In this case, the X chromosome comes from the mother and the Y chromosome comes from the father.
Did you see? The sex of a baby is determined by the chromosome (X or Y) that the father inherits. Because a mother can only give an X chromosome to her child. A father can give either an X or a Y. So if the father inherits a Y, it's a boy, and if the father inherits an X, it's a girl. Isn't this also very interesting?
Are these chromosomes important to us even after birth?
Yes, absolutely! Even after you are born, these 46 chromosomes continue to work inside your body, in almost every cell. You grow up little by little from childhood, your height increases, your body changes, your nails and hair grow, and when you get a wound, it heals, all of this is guided by the genes inside those chromosomes.
