What is the relationship between depression and anxiety?

Simply put, anxiety is a normal response of our body to stress. Imagine that you are walking down the street and suddenly a dog jumps up. Then your heart beats faster, your body starts sweating, right? That's what it is. However, if this feeling comes up all the time for no reason, it is not a healthy condition. That is what we call an Anxiety Disorder.

Many people with depression also have some level of anxiety. It's like two sides of the coin. But there's a slight difference between the two. In depression, the main symptom is a depressed mood. However, in an anxiety disorder, the main symptom is an overwhelming sense of fear or worry.

Remember, both of these conditions can be caused by both genetic factors and environmental factors.

Major medical conditions associated with anxiety

There are many other conditions that fall under the umbrella of anxiety. You may have heard of these names.

Disorder Simple explanation
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) Constantly worrying excessively, even about ordinary things, for no particular reason.
Panic Disorder Sudden, uncontrollable intense fear and physical symptoms.
Specific Phobias An unusual fear of something, such as an animal, a height, or a certain situation.
Social Anxiety Disorder An intense fear of doing, speaking, or being made fun of in front of others.

Previously, both Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) were classified as anxiety disorders. However, new medical classifications now treat them as separate conditions.

What is generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)?

A person with this condition experiences extreme anxiety about even the most ordinary things. They worry unnecessarily about their health, job, family problems, and finances. They feel as if something big is going to happen. In this condition, the following symptoms may also be seen.

  • Difficulty focusing on one thing.
  • Constantly feeling tired.
  • Getting angry over small things.
  • Muscle pain for no reason.
  • Restlessness, unable to stay in one place.

This is a condition that can occur with depression. It is a sudden, overwhelming fear that occurs at an unexpected time. This is called a panic attack. At that time, you feel like you are suffocating, your heart is beating fast, you feel like you are going to die, or you feel like you are going crazy.

Four or more of the following symptoms may occur at this time:

  • Chest pain
  • Difficulty breathing or choking

Other mental problems that can accompany depression

Depression can be associated with not only anxiety, but also several other mental health problems.

Eating Disorders

Depression, anxiety, and eating disorders often go hand in hand. This involves going to extremes in controlling your eating. Either you don't eat anything because you're controlling your eating, or you binge eat and vomit. These can be very harmful to your body if left untreated.

Disorder Main feature
Anorexia Nervosa Intentionally not eating due to fear of gaining weight, even though you are hungry. This can also be due to a desire to control your life.
Bulimia Nervosa Eating a large amount of food at once and then vomiting or using laxatives due to fear of being full or discomfort.

Substance Abuse

When stress, depression, and anxiety become unbearable, some people turn to drugs or alcohol. While it may seem like a temporary relief, it can quickly become a bigger problem. This is a condition called dual diagnosis . This means having both a mental illness like depression and a drug addiction. This is a very dangerous situation.

This may require hospitalization and treatment such as detoxification . Counseling and medication for depression are also essential.

Schizophrenia and depression Schizophrenia is a severe mental illness that causes confusion and inability to distinguish between reality and fantasy. Although people with this disorder may also experience depression, the two illnesses are different in nature and how they affect the brain.

ADHD, PTSD, and other conditions

  • ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder): This is characterized by hyperactivity and difficulty maintaining attention. About a third of people with ADHD also experience depression.
  • PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder): A condition characterized by frequent recollections of a traumatic event, such as a serious accident or act of violence, and psychological distress. Depression and anxiety are also common among these people.
  • Personality Disorders: In these, a person's feelings and behavior patterns differ from social norms. They have difficulty maintaining relationships with others. These people are also more likely to develop mood disorders such as depression.
