Sometimes we have to face unexpected things in life, don't we? Some people can lose their eyes due to an accident, maybe an infection, or a condition that is present at birth. When that happens, they may need to be fitted with an artificial eye (Prosthetic Eye) instead. In such cases, there is a specialist who helps us, who designs and fits these artificial eyes. They are what we call `Ocularist`. So today, let's talk about who this `Ocularist` is and how he can help you.
Who exactly is an Ocularist?
Simply put, an Ocularist is someone who has received special training in the design, fitting, and care of prosthetic eyes. Imagine how emotionally devastating it can be to lose an eye. So, one of the main goals of an Ocularist is to make the new prosthetic eye look as natural as possible, restore the person's facial appearance, and help improve their quality of life.
These Ocularists do not work alone. They are part of your healthcare team. They typically work in conjunction with Ophthalmologists, who are doctors who perform eye surgery, and sometimes Oculoplastic surgeons, who specialize in plastic surgery around the eyes.
There can be several reasons for losing an eye:
- Injury: Something like a car accident or an accident while playing sports.
- Infection: If some severe eye infections cannot be controlled.
- Certain medical conditions: For example, things like eye cancer.
- Congenital conditions: Some babies are born with very small eyes (Microphthalmia) or no eyes at all (Anophthalmia). In these cases, the help of an Ocularist is also needed.
What is the role of an ocularist? What do they do?
An Ocularist is a specially trained technician who will help you make an artificial eye after your eye has been completely removed (medically called an enucleation) or just the inside of your eye has been removed (evisceration).
Usually, after an eye removal surgery, the wounds need to heal for at least six weeks before an artificial eye can be implanted. That's when the Ocularist's work begins. This is a multi-step, time-consuming process.
Here are the main things they do:
Fitting
First, the Ocularist will look at your other eye, take measurements of your eye socket, and design a custom-made eye for you. They will show you samples of the eyepieces and help you choose the one that best suits you. This is similar to having a dress made.
Fabricating an artificial eye
Next is the actual creation of the artificial eye. Various materials are used for this. The most commonly used is a special type of plastic called `Acrylic`. Sometimes silicone or other special materials can also be used. Every `Ocularist` has received special training in how to use these materials.
Appearance
This is arguably the most important and artistic part of an Ocularist's work.
This is where the artificial eye is made to look as close to your healthy eye as possible. They hand-paint the artificial eye with very delicate details, including the color of the other eye and the tiny veins in the white of the eye. This is what gives the artificial eye its incredibly natural look.
Cleaning and Maintaining
Once the artificial eye is made, the Ocularist will teach you how to put it on, how to take it off, and how to clean and care for it daily.
- Regular cleaning is very important because it helps prevent infections and keeps the artificial eye in good condition for a long time.
- Typically, you should see an Ocularist at least once a year to check your artificial eye, have it professionally cleaned, and make sure the tissues around your eye are healthy. Young children may need to go more often.
Can an ocularist prescribe medication?
No. An Ocularist is not a medical doctor. Therefore, they cannot prescribe medication. However, if you have an eye or eyelid infection, or any other medical problem, an Ocularist can refer you to a qualified doctor, such as an Ophthalmologist.
Who cleans artificial eyes?
Ocularists clean artificial eyes. Some eye health care providers, such as ophthalmologists, optometrists, or opticians, may also offer this service. Ask your eye doctor if they offer this service, or if they can refer you to someone else.
However, `Ocularist` will teach you how to clean your eyes daily at home. It is very important to follow those instructions carefully.
What do you need to do to become an Ocularist? (This is a bit detailed!)
Becoming an `Ocularist` is not easy. It requires a lot of dedication and long-term training . There may be a little less information about this field in Sri Lanka, but there is an internationally accepted methodology.
- This usually requires years of training as an apprentice under an experienced Ocularist , along with educational qualifications . This can amount to tens of thousands of hours. That is about 5 years or more.
- Along with this training, you have to learn many scientific subjects such as eye anatomy, physiology, materials science, optics, and dermatology.
- Not only that, artistic skills are also very important. Because making artificial eyes look natural is like painting or sculpting. Therefore, this training also includes things like painting, sculpture, and photography.
- In addition to all this, the ability to communicate well with patients is also very important, because you have to be very sensitive when talking to someone who has lost their sight.
After successfully completing this training, in some countries there are exams to obtain special certifications such as `Board Certified Ocularist (BCO).` Having such a certification means that the `Ocularist` has a high level of qualifications and experience.
Why is it so important to see an ocularist?
If you need an artificial eye, there are many benefits to seeing an Ocularist.
- Comfort: You can get a prosthetic eye that fits your eye socket perfectly and is comfortable.
- Natural look: When we talk to someone, the first thing we look at is the eyes. So if the artificial eye looks as natural as possible, you will feel more confident. An `Ocularist` tries to give this look as much as possible.
- Long-term care: An Ocularist is not someone you meet once and that's it. They will continue to care for you and provide you with the necessary advice.
- Increased self-confidence: When you get a natural-looking, comfortable prosthetic eye, you will have a lot more confidence in socializing and talking to others.
Just think of the joy you feel when you wear a beautiful, well-fitting dress. Similarly, receiving a well-made artificial eye makes you feel very relaxed and confident.
Finally, things to remember (Take-Home Message)
