Have you ever had to undergo surgery? Or has someone in your family had to? Then there is a team of specialists who can put you completely asleep so that you don't feel any pain, or numb a part of your body, right? Today, we are going to talk about a field that provides that essential service, but we don't talk about it much. In particular, we are going to talk about "Nurse Anesthetists", who receive special training for this in some countries.
Who is a Nurse Anesthetist?
Simply put, this is a medical professional who is specially trained to administer anesthesia to patients so that they do not feel pain during surgery or other medical procedures. They are also known as Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs).
In Sri Lanka, this work is mainly done by anesthesiologists. That is, doctors who have studied anesthesia for several years after their medical degree and gained specialist knowledge. However, in countries like the United States, specially trained nurses are also allowed to do this work. Studies have shown that the safety, quality and results of anesthesia services provided by both parties are at the same level . Therefore, whoever performs this work, it is imperative to meet the highest level of training and qualifications.
What exactly are these people doing?
The job of an anesthesiologist is more complex than you might think. It's not just about "giving you a sedative." It's their responsibility to keep you safe and comfortable throughout your surgery.
Before the surgery, the anesthesiologist will meet with you and ask you about your health, other medications you are taking, and any allergies you may have. They will also explain the type of anesthesia you will be given, its risks, and side effects.
During the surgery, they will continue to monitor your vital signs , such as your heart rate, body temperature, blood pressure, and breathing . They will adjust the anesthesia dose as needed to keep you stable. After the surgery, they will take care of you until you regain consciousness and your condition improves.
There are several main types of anesthesia. The most appropriate method will depend on the nature of your surgery and your health condition.
| Type of Anesthesia | What happens to it? |
|---|---|
| General Anesthesia | In this, you will be completely asleep. You will not feel or remember anything during the surgery. For this, the medicine will be given to you either by breathing it in (through a mask) or through a cannula placed into a vein (IV - Intravenous). |
| Regional Anesthesia | In this, only the area of the body being operated on is numbed. For example, if you are having surgery on your arm, only your arm may be numbed, or if you are having surgery on your leg, only your lower back may be numbed. The epidural given during childbirth also falls into this category. You are conscious, but you do not feel pain. |
| Sedation | This puts you into a light sleep or sedation. It reduces your fear and anxiety and makes you feel relaxed. This method is commonly used in tests like Endoscopy and Colonoscopy. There are several levels here too: - Mild Sedation: You will feel relaxed and sleepy. - Moderate Sedation: You may feel drowsy, but you can be easily awakened if necessary. - Deep Sedation: You will fall into a deep sleep and will have no memory of the treatment. |
When are anesthesia services needed?
Anesthesia is an extremely important facility that allows us to receive medical treatment safely and without pain.
There are several main situations where these services are needed.
For surgeries and medical tests
From minor surgeries like ear tubes to major surgeries like hip replacements, anesthesia is essential for any surgical procedure. It is also used for things like tooth extractions and plastic surgery. Sedation is also used to reduce discomfort during procedures like endoscopy or colonoscopy.
During childbirth
Regional anesthesia is very helpful in controlling the pain during childbirth. In the most commonly used method, the epidural , painkillers are continuously administered through a very thin tube (catheter) inserted into the spinal area. This allows the mother to participate in the birth consciously and without pain. If a Caesarean section is required, this method can sometimes be used for that as well. Alternatively, a Caesarean section is performed using a single painkiller injection into the spine (Spinal anesthesia). In case of an emergency, these professionals are also prepared to quickly put the mother under general anesthesia.
Chronic Pain Management
Some anesthesiologists also help create pain management plans for patients with chronic pain, including injections, medications, and physical therapy.
