What exactly are the adrenal glands?
Simply put, the adrenal glands are two small, cap-like glands located on top of our kidneys . They are part of our body's endocrine system.
Now you may be wondering what the endocrine system is. Imagine that there is a large communication network inside our body. In various places in this network, there are glands that are like little factories. These factories make special messengers and release them into the blood. Is it possible to live without adrenal glands?
This is a question that many people have. Hormones like cortisol, which are produced by the adrenal glands, are essential to our lives. However, due to certain medical conditions (e.g. cancer), there are times when both adrenal glands need to be surgically removed (adrenalectomy).
If that happens, that person will have to take those hormones externally as medicine for the rest of their life . If they take those hormones properly, they can live a normal life. Therefore, even without the glands, they cannot live without their hormones.
Can adrenal gland diseases occur?
Yes. Like any other organ, there are several medical conditions that can affect the adrenal glands. These problems mainly occur for two reasons:
- Overproduction of hormones: If the gland becomes overactive and produces more hormones than necessary.
- Underproduction of hormones: If the gland is not able to produce the required amount of hormones, either due to damage or for some other reason.
There are several reasons why these situations may occur:
- Genetic mutations
- Autoimmune diseases - This means that our body's own defense system attacks the adrenal glands.
