Our body is like a very amazing, complex machine. In order for this machine to work continuously and without any problems, many interconnected systems need to work together. One such very important system is the endocrine system , or as we say in English, the endocrine system. Simply put, this is the hormone factory in our body. So, two very important, little members of this hormone factory are the adrenal glands . Today we are talking about these two little heroes.

What are these adrenal glands?

The adrenal glands are two small, triangular-shaped glands. They work as part of our endocrine system. This system is a network of glands and organs that produce and secrete chemical messengers, called hormones, that control various functions throughout our bodies. It's like a communication network in our bodies. In addition to the adrenal glands, there are several other important members of this system. Let's get to know them a little.
Gland / Section Main function
Hypothalamus Located in the brain, it is the master that controls the entire endocrine system.
Ovaries Production of hormones such as estrogen and progesterone in women.
Pancreas Production of the hormone insulin, which controls blood sugar levels.
Parathyroid glands (Parathyroid) Controlling calcium levels in the body.
Pineal gland Production of the hormone melatonin, which regulates sleep.
Pituitary gland This gland, located at the base of the brain, produces many hormones essential to the body.
Testicles (Testes) Testosterone hormone and sperm production in men.
Thyroid gland Located in the front of the neck, it controls the body's metabolism.

Where are these glands located?

You have two adrenal glands. They are located on top of your kidneys, like little caps. Sitting here, these glands, following instructions from your brain, produce and release their respective hormones into the bloodstream.

What actually happens to the adrenal glands?

As we mentioned earlier, the main function of the adrenal glands is to produce hormones. These hormones can be divided into two main groups. They are catecholamines and steroid hormones. There are two parts to this gland. The inner part is called the Adrenal Medulla, and the outer part is called the Adrenal Cortex. These two parts produce various hormones.
Imagine you're walking down the street and suddenly a dog jumps out, or you see a car speeding by. At that moment, your heart rate increases, your eyes widen, and your breathing rate increases, right? That "fight or flight" response is triggered by hormones secreted by the adrenal glands .
Let's now look at what these hormones are and what happens to them.
HormoneCategory and place of manufacture Main functions
Adrenaline Catecholamines (inner part - Medulla) Preparing the body for an emergency or dangerous situation (Fight or Flight). Increases heart rate and breathing.
Noradrenaline Catecholamines (inner part - Medulla) It works together with adrenaline, mainly to increase and maintain blood pressure.
Aldosterone Steroid (outer part - Cortex) Regulating blood pressure and the levels of electrolytes such as sodium and potassium in the blood.
Cortisol Steroid (outer part - Cortex) Helps in stress management. In addition, it helps in regulating sleep, metabolism, blood pressure and sugar levels, and reduces inflammation in the body.
DHEA Steroid (outer part - Cortex) Helping to produce sex hormones such as estrogen in women and androgen in men.
If the adrenal glands, which play such an important role, become dysfunctional or overactive, various medical conditions can occur. Let's take a look at some of the main such conditions.
Medical condition Simply because Common symptoms
Adrenal Cancer Cancerous growths on the glands. Excessive secretion of a certain hormone, abdominal pain.
Adrenal Insufficiency / Addison's Disease Not producing enough of the hormone cortisol. Severe fatigue, dizziness, stomach upset, weight loss, low blood pressure, low blood sugar, muscle pain, skin discoloration.
Cushing's Syndrome Excessive production of the hormone cortisol. Weight gain (especially in the face, neck and abdomen), high blood pressure, diabetes, muscle weakness, thinning skin.
Hyperaldosteronism Excessive production of the hormone aldosterone. High blood pressure, low blood potassium levels, headache, muscle weakness, numbness.
Pheochromocytoma Excessive secretion of adrenaline or noradrenaline due to a tumor in the inner part of the gland (medulla). Sudden high blood pressure, rapid heartbeat, excessive sweating, headache, tremors, anxiety.
Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia A genetic condition that is present at birth. A deficiency in the enzymes that produce hormones. Premature puberty in boys, emergence of masculine characteristics in girls.
Important: If you have any of the symptoms listed here and they persist for a long time, please consult a doctor for advice. Do not self-diagnose or treat yourself by looking online.
Conditions like adrenal insufficiency, if not treated properly, can lead to serious conditions like kidney failure or shock. Therefore, it is very important to be aware of this.

💡 Take-Home Message

  • The adrenal glands , although small in size, are two very important organs that control stress , blood pressure , energy levels, and much more in our body.
  • If you experience unexplained changes in your energy level, weight, mood, or blood pressure, it could be a sign of a hormonal problem.
  • If symptoms such as extreme fatigue , dizziness , and sudden changes in weight persist, do not ignore them.
  • If you have any doubts or concerns regarding this, the best thing to do is to consult a qualified doctor.
