All the information about how your body's organs should grow, how they should work, and what you should look like is written in this DNA.
Simply put, DNA is like a big library that contains all the information about you, written in a language that the cells in our body can read. This DNA is inside the cells of every living thing. You get your DNA from your parents. You inherit exactly half from your mother and the other half from your father .
The word DNA stands for Deoxyribonucleic acid . The name sounds a bit complicated, doesn't it? But its meaning is very simple. It's a special type of acid found in the "brain" of our cells, inside the nucleus.

The complete set of DNA in your body is called the genome . It's like the big library I mentioned earlier. This library is organized like this.

What really happens to DNA?

Just like our Sinhala alphabet, these four letters combine one by one, creating billions of different instructions. Imagine the letters 'ல', 'ம', 'ய' are combined to form the word 'லமா'. If you switch the letters, you get another word like 'மலா'. That's how these letters A, C, G, T combine one by one, creating the different instructions your body needs. That's why everyone's DNA is unique.
These four letters stand for the four chemical bases : Adenine, Cytosine, Guanine, and Thymine . The cells in our body read these letters and make proteins in several steps.
1. Transcription: Another special molecule called RNA (like a postman) comes along and copies the instructions in the DNA. Then it takes that copy out of the nucleus.
2. Translation: Next, little factory-like structures called ribosomes read the RNA message and, according to the instructions in it, assemble amino acids to form a protein.
3. Final processing: The protein thus prepared is then further modified, folded properly, and sent to the desired location in the body.
Simply put, DNA is the master plan. RNA is the person who takes a copy of that plan and brings it to the workplace. Ribosomes are the workers who follow that plan and do the work. Protein is the final product.
What is the shape and structure of DNA?
The shape of DNA is very beautiful. It is called a double helix.That means it's like two spiral staircases that are twisted together. If you can easily imagine it, it's shaped like a spiral staircase .
DNA is made up of tiny building blocks called nucleotides . Each nucleotide has three parts.

Our bodies have their own systems to make sure that there are no mistakes when making copies of our DNA. It's like proofreading a letter. But sometimes this process can fail.
