What is 'Morning Depression'?

Simply put, 'Morning Depression' is when the symptoms of depression are worse in the morning than at other times of the day. However, it is not classified as a separate medical condition. That is, there is no separate illness called 'Morning Depression' in the official books that doctors use to classify mental illnesses.

So what is this? This is actually a pattern that can be seen in someone with clinical depression. Doctors also call this 'diurnal mood variation'. That is, mood swings at different times of the day. While some people may feel more depressed in the morning, others may feel more sad and anxious in the afternoon or at night.

The important thing is, don't just brush this off as "laziness" or "morning grogginess." It could be a symptom of something deeper.

What are the symptoms of morning depression?

'Morning Depression' is the same symptoms you see in regular depression, but they are most severe in the morning. See if you experience any of these things when you wake up in the morning.

Symptom How does it feel? (How it feels)
Lack of energy to start the day Even after waking up, my body feels lifeless. I have no interest or energy to start the day's work. My body feels incredibly tired.
Difficulty getting out of bedEven when the alarm goes off, you don't feel like getting out of bed. You oversleep, or you stay in bed for hours even after waking up.
Feelings of sadness and anxiety I feel very sad and empty for no reason. I am tormented by fear and anxiety about the future.

Loss of interest in anything You lose all desire to do things you used to enjoy (watching TV, talking to a friend, reading a book) in the morning.

What could be causing this?

There are several reasons why this condition called 'Morning Depression' can occur. These may be directly related to depression, or they may be due to other health problems.

Sleep Problems

There is a very close relationship between sleep and depression. It's like a double-edged sword. People who don't sleep well are more likely to develop depression. Also, when you have depression, it becomes difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep.

The main physical cause of this is a condition called Obstructive Sleep Apnea . Simply put, this is when your breathing stops for a while during sleep and then starts again. This can happen several times throughout the night. This prevents you from getting enough, deep sleep. It has been found that treating this condition can even reduce symptoms of depression.

Stress Hormones

Our bodies have a hormone called (Cortisol). This is the fight or flight' hormone that prepares us to face danger or stress. When this hormone is released, our heart rate, blood pressure, blood sugar levels, and breathing rate increase.

Normally, our body's (Cortisol) levels reach their highest levels after we wake up in the morning. This is natural. However, some people's bodies can be overly sensitive to this hormone. That is, when the (Cortisol) levels rise in the morning, it can negatively affect their mood, causing sadness and anxiety.

Inflammation in the body

Research has found that depression, schizophrenia-likeIt has been shown that people with mental illnesses like schizophrenia have high levels of an inflammatory chemical called Interleukin-6 (IL-6) in the brain.

This (IL-6) level also varies at different times of the day. For many people, its level reaches its highest value in the morning. Some studies have shown that the increase in (IL-6) levels in the morning coincides with the increase in (Cortisol) levels. The effect of both these chemicals can increase morning mood.

So what should we do?

If you think you have any of these symptoms, don't worry. There are several things you can do to manage the condition.

1. First, get an accurate diagnosis.

This is the most important step. Don't just dismiss this weight and worry as "just a feeling of sadness." Talk openly with your family doctor or a trusted medical professional about what you're feeling. Then you can figure out exactly what's causing this, whether it's depression or a symptom of another physical illness.

2. Take care of your overall health

Physical health and mental health are two interconnected things.

  • Eat a good diet . Nutritious food and drinks have a positive effect on your mood.
  • Exercise regularly . Even walking for 30 minutes a day can bring great relief to your mind.
  • If you have other diseases like diabetes or heart disease, control them well .

3. Talk to your doctor about your medication.

If you are already taking any medications for other conditions, tell your doctor. Sometimes, certain medications or combinations of medications can cause mood swings as a side effect. Your doctor can review your medication list and make changes if necessary. Never stop or change medications without your doctor's advice.
