How common is this condition? Who is most at risk?
It is estimated that between 1% and 2% of the population may have optic disc drusen. Some reports have put the prevalence at 1.8% to 2.4%. The condition can affect anyone, regardless of gender. However, it has been found to be slightly more common in white people compared to other ethnic groups.
How do you know if you have these? What are the symptoms?
Most of the time, people with optic disc drusen don't have any symptoms . Sometimes, your eye doctor will only discover them when you go for a routine eye exam.

This test is performed using a pigment called ``Lipofuscin'' that is present in our body (which accumulates as we age or in certain medical conditions).
Is there a treatment for this? How is it managed?
If you have optic disc drusen, you probably won't need any treatment or special management . There is currently no surgery or cure for this condition. But don't worry, most people don't have to worry about it.
If I have Optic Disc Drusen, what should I expect?
The prognosis for someone with optic disc drusen is generally very good . However, some patients may experience some loss of peripheral vision . That is the main thing that can happen.
Very rarely, these drusen can cause complications. These rare complications include:
- Choroidal neovascular membranes (CNVM): These are abnormal new blood vessels that form inside the eye. They can bleed, which can cause loss of central vision. If this happens, laser treatment may be needed to stop the bleeding.
- Anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION): This is when the blood supply to the optic nerve is reduced, causing damage to the nerve.
- Retinal vascular occlusions: A blockage of the blood vessels in the retina.
These are very rare events, so don't be unnecessarily alarmed.
Is this situation dangerous?

Not to be confused with Papilledema!
Some people also call optic disc drusen "pseudopapilledema." "Pseudo" means false, meaning it's not real.
PapilledemaThis is when the pressure inside your skull (intracranial pressure) causes the optic disc to swell. This is a medical emergency.
Optic disc drusen can also cause the optic nerve root to appear swollen, but it is not a true swelling. That is why it is called `Pseudopapilledema`.
Glaucoma and Optic Disc Drusen
Both glaucoma and optic disc drusen can cause problems with your visual field. Sometimes, both conditions can occur together. Therefore, your doctor must be able to distinguish between the two conditions . Glaucoma is a serious eye condition that requires treatment.
Is there a connection with Retinitis Pigmentosa?
People with a condition called retinitis pigmentosa (RP) are more likely to develop optic disc drusen than the general population. This risk is particularly high in people with some types of RP and in people with a condition called Usher syndrome .
Does Noonan syndrome also affect?
Noonan syndrome is a genetic disorder. People with this disorder may have problems with the development of the optic disc. Therefore, a person with Noonan syndrome may also have optic disc drusen.
