As a mother or father, you may sometimes find yourself wondering, "Oh my god, do I need to take my little one to the doctor right now? Or can I wait a little longer?" It's normal to feel a little nervous at times like that. But
it's important to know when and where to seek medical advice without panicking. Let's talk about this in detail today, okay?
There are some situations, which are really
serious , and it is not good to ignore them thinking that it is something small. In such a situation, instead of rushing from home to a doctor with your child in a vehicle, it is better for the child's life to go to the hospital with the help of trained medical staff and with the necessary facilities. In Sri Lanka, we have a number that we can call for help without delaying a second in such an emergency, and that is
the 1990 Suwaseriya Ambulance Service . It is very important to `save` this number in your phone. Because, if you rush to search for the number in an emergency, you can waste time. Now let's see in which cases we
should call 1990 immediately :
- If your baby is not breathing , seems to be having a hard time breathing, or appears to be turning blue , this is a very dangerous situation.
- If the baby falls and loses consciousness , it could happen if they hit their head while playing.
- If a baby suddenly has a seizure , that means their body shakes, their limbs twitch, and they may even lose consciousness.
- If you have a serious allergic reaction , such as to certain foods, medications, or insect stings, you may experience symptoms such as difficulty breathing, hives, and swelling of the mouth and lips.
- If a bone is broken and it looks like it's sticking out of the skin , this is also a very serious injury.
- If the baby has taken too much of some medicine, something unknown, and now it's hard to wake him up even if you talk to him .
- If the baby has something stuck in his throat and is having trouble breathing .
- If you can't stop bleeding from a big wound .
In a situation like this, don't think twice.
Call 1990 immediately . They will come to you quickly, giving you the basic advice you need.
When should we take the baby directly to the hospital's Emergency Treatment Unit (ETU) ?
A hospital emergency room, also known as the ER (Emergency Room), or ED (Emergency Department), is a place where you can quickly treat serious illnesses and accidents.
They are available 24 hours a day, day or night, to deal with life-threatening situations. In these cases, it's best to take your baby straight to the hospital emergency room:
- If you have difficulty breathing (but there is no immediate threat to call 1990, but the situation seems serious).
- If the baby is unusually sleepy , or is talking or behaving strangely, it is called `(confusion)`.
- If you have a fever with a stiff neck that makes it difficult to turn your neck to one side , this can sometimes be a sign of a more serious condition, such as brain fever.
- If your heart feels like it's constantly beating loudly .
- If you think you've drunk something poisonous, an unknown drug, or something else inappropriate .
- If you hit your head and vomit at the same time , this is a sign that something may have happened inside your head.
- If the eye is seriously injured . The eye is a very sensitive organ.
- If there is a significant burn injury .
Remember, acting quickly at a time like this can save the child's life or prevent long-term health problems.
So, at what time should we call our family doctor?
If you have a minor health problem with your child, or if you want to know about something that doesn't seem like a big emergency, but you have doubts or fears, the best thing to do is to talk to your regular doctor or nurse who knows your child well. He or she may tell you, "Let's do this," "Let's take a look at this," or "No, we need to take a look at this, come back soon." Imagine, if you always go to the same doctor, he or she will know your child's illnesses, the medications he or she has been given in the past, and his or her health history very well. In medicine, we call this
'continuity of care.' That means continuing to receive treatment from someone who knows you and your child well. This is very important, because then unnecessary tests and unnecessary medications are avoided, and the treatment is also more successful. Here are some common, but concerning, situations to talk to your
doctor about:
- If there is a fever (especially in young babies, you need to be careful about fever).
- If you have an earache .
- A sore throat .
- A stomach ache .
- If you have vomiting or diarrhea .
- If you are showing signs of possible dehydration (dry mouth, decreased urine output, sunken eyes).
- If you have a rash on your body.
- If you make a wheezing sound when you breathe (wheezing) .
- If the cough has been present for several days.
At times like this,
the doctorIt is wise to talk and seek advice.
If we can't see our doctor, can we go to an urgent care center?
Imagine you can't get to your doctor, his clinic is closed, or it's taking a long time to get an appointment, but your baby is having a hard time. What do you do then? In such a situation, we can think of
an 'Urgent Care Center' . These are the same types of clinics that your regular doctor sees, but they have a little more facilities. For example, some places can do things like
X-rays ,
stitches for minor injuries,
and splints for broken limbs. These are not as big and specialized as the emergency department (ER) of a large public hospital. But they are a good place to get more facilities and services than a regular 'clinic', especially for emergencies that don't require a long wait but are not life-threatening. Some private hospitals in Sri Lanka have 24-hour
outpatient departments (OPD) or small
emergency treatment units (ETU) . Here are some things you can go to at an Urgent Care Center:
- Simple fractures (those that do not break through the skin).
- Minor burns .
- Cuts (not too big, bleeding can be controlled).
- Remove sharp objects like thorns when they are stuck .
- Sprains and other minor sports-related injuries.
- Minor animal bite wounds (especially from dogs and cats).
- Things like fever, stomach ache, vomiting, diarrhea, etc., when you can't get to your doctor.
Can't you talk to a doctor over the phone and get medicine? (Let's learn about Telehealth)
Another great convenience that we have now with technology is
`Telehealth` . Some people also call this
`Telemedicine` . Simply put, this is a way for you to talk to a doctor from your home, using your phone or `computer`, perhaps through a video call, show your child, describe the symptoms, and get medical advice. This is very useful for minor illnesses like minor injuries, colds, and coughs in your child, or when it is difficult to go to the doctor. But remember,
this does not work for serious conditions . You can also check if the doctor you regularly go to or the hospital system where you are receiving treatment provides `(Telemedicine)` services. You may be able to get this service on their `website` or through an `app`. Some conditions that can be treated through `Telemedicine`:
- Skin rashes .
- MinorCuts or burns.
- Eye disease (pinkeye / conjunctivitis) .
- Colds .
- Fever (unless accompanied by other serious symptoms).
- Mild allergic reactions .
- Vomiting, diarrhea (unless dehydrated).
So, let's just remind ourselves of what we talked about?
Isn't it very important to know what to do quickly and where to go when your baby is sick, without panicking?
If you have any doubts, if you are worried about 'I don't know what this is, should I see a doctor or not', the best thing to do is to seek medical advice. It is said that when it comes to the illnesses of young children, it is okay to be overly cautious.
Also, whether you take your child to the ER, Urgent Care, or via telemedicine,
be sure to follow up with your family doctor afterward. He or she can update your child's health information and provide further treatment or monitoring if necessary. This way, you can provide the best possible health care for your child.
