Are you also thinking about your health and changing your current eating habits and focusing on a more healthy way for your body? When you think like that, we hear about different eating patterns. Some people stop eating all animal foods like meat, fish, and eggs and become completely vegan. Others eliminate only meat and eat eggs and dairy (vegetarian). In the meantime, there is another special group. They do not eat meat from land animals like beef, pork, and chicken, but they do eat fish and other seafood. That is what we call a Pescatarian diet. Let's talk about this in more depth today.

Who exactly is a Pescatarian?

Simply put, a pescatarian is someone who eats a vegetarian diet that includes fish and other seafood. Their main diet consists of:
  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Whole grains
  • Legumes like lentils and chickpeas
  • Nuts and seeds.
  • Eggs and dairy foods (some avoid these too, but most eat them)
  • And most importantly, fish and other seafood like shrimp, squid, and crab.
However, they do not eat any land animal meat like chicken, beef, goat, or pork . Imagine, this is like being in a vegetarian family, but only eating fish.

Why do people turn to this Pescatarian diet?

There are two main reasons for this. Some people make this decision based on environmental reasons. They believe that raising land animals for meat is detrimental to the environment, consumes too many natural resources, and causes pollution. However, the majority of people choose this fish-based diet because they are concerned about their health. Research has even proven that this plant-based and fish-based diet is very beneficial for the body.

What are the real health benefits of this?

Like meat, fish is also a very good source of protein. However, fish has several advantages when compared to red meat.
Studies show that reducing or completely eliminating red meat consumption, in particular, reduces the risk of heart disease and high blood pressure .

A best friend at heart!

Fish is something that helps a lot with your heart health.
  • Low in saturated fat : While red meat is high in heart-damaging saturated fat , fish contains very little of this type of fat.
  • Rich in Omega-3 : Oily fish like salmon, mackerel, herring, and sardines are rich in heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids . These omega-3s have many benefits for our bodies.
  • It reduces plaque buildup, which is the buildup of fat in blood vessels.
  • Reduces the risk of irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) .
  • It helps reduce triglycerides, a type of bad fat in the blood. This is also great for heart health.
  • These healthy fatty acids also help control blood pressure.
That's why doctors recommend that including fish in your diet at least twice a week is very good for heart health.

Reducing the risk of cancer

Research has also found that reducing your intake of red meat, especially processed meats, can reduce the risk of developing some types of cancer, such as colon cancer.

Lucky to live a long time?

One study found that people who follow a pescatarian diet tend to live longer than those who eat red meat and poultry.

Are there any disadvantages to this method? What are the things to be careful about?

Like everything in life, too much of anything is not good. Fish and seafood are no exception. There are a few things you should definitely be aware of if you are considering this diet.

Mercury Hazard

This is the main thing. Some types of fish, especially large fish at the top of the marine food chain, can have high levels of a heavy metal called mercury in their bodies. This mercury can be harmful to our health, especially the nervous system. These people should be especially careful:
  • Pregnant mothers
  • Breastfeeding mothers
  • Young children
Therefore, if you are going to be a Pescatarian, it is wise to choose fish that are low in mercury.
Mercury levelExamples (including common fish in Sri Lanka)
High mercury (avoid taking too much) Swordfish, Shark, King Mackerel/Large Tuna
Low in mercury (food grade) Sardines, Herring, Salmon, Anchovies, Shrimp, Squid, Smallmouth Bass

Iron Deficiency

Red meat is one of the best sources of iron for our bodies. So, if we stop eating red meat completely, some people may develop iron deficiency. This is especially important for women who are menstruating . But there is nothing to worry about. There are plenty of plant-based foods that are rich in iron.
  • Lentils, chickpeas, green beans
  • Dark green leafy vegetables like spinach, kale, spinach, and moringa leaves
  • Tofu
  • Iron-fortified cereals

Don't be fooled by the "vegetarian" label!

Not all foods labeled "meat-free" or "vegetarian" are healthy. Sometimes these can be highly processed foods. They can be high in sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats. So, no matter what diet you follow, it's best to try to eat as many unprocessed, natural foods as possible. The most important thing is to talk to your family doctor before making such a big dietary change to make sure that all your nutritional needs are covered. He or she will be able to give you the nutritional advice you need.
