Imagine, in the middle of a barren desert, there was a small box that could make clean drinking water from air. It sounds like a scene from a science fiction movie, doesn't it? But it's now a reality. Today we're talking about some of the most amazing new technologies that could solve the world's dire water crisis.

According to the United Nations, more than two billion people in the world do not have access to safe drinking water . Some areas are naturally water-scarce. And droughts caused by climate change have exacerbated the problem. For some people, the water they do have is dirty, full of germs and toxic chemicals . For some, both. So scientists are finding new, surprising ways to solve this problem.

Desert Harvester: A box that makes water from air in the desert

The air we breathe contains a large amount of water vapor, which we cannot see. This is one of the largest sources of water on Earth.

According to Omar M. Yaghi, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, using a tiny amount of water vapor in the atmosphere, less than .001%, we could provide 50 liters of water per day to every person on the planet.

Professor Yagi and his team have found a novel way to harness this vast, invisible water resource. They have combined special molecules to create a scaffold-like structure. These are called metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) . These are amazing things. A piece of MOF, as small as a bone, has a surface area as large as two football fields if you spread it out.

They created a Plexiglas box filled with this MOF material. This box heats up when exposed to sunlight. The MOF inside the box then absorbs even the smallest amount of water vapor in the air of a very dry desert. Then, that absorbed water vapor turns into a liquid and is collected as clean, drinkable water. As Professor Yagi says, “There is no other material in the world that can absorb water from the air at such low humidity and release it again, except for this MOF.”

A solar-powered box made with just 200 grams of this MOF can collect more than a gallon (nearly 4.5 liters) of water per day. An electric-powered model can do this continuously all day long.

A 'Bio-Brain Toxin Detector' that detects toxins in water

It's not enough for water to be clean, it also needs to be safe. Water can contain dangerous toxins that we can't see or taste. For example, arsenic , lead, and dangerous bacteria . Researchers at Northwestern University are trying to find an easy way to detect these.

They have enlisted the help of microorganisms to do this. These microorganisms have an amazing ability to recognize and protect themselves from toxic substances in the water. It's as if they have a specialized 'genetic molecular brain' for that very purpose.

How does this work?

Simply put, these microorganisms have a type of protein called biosensors in their bodies. When there is a toxic substance in the water, for example, lead, this biosensor goes and attaches to those lead molecules. Then a certain gene in the body of that microorganism is activated, and that lead is pumped out of the body.

What the researchers did was take these biosensors and slightly modify their DNA structure. By modifying it, they turned on a gene that would emit light (glow) instead of the gene that would emit poison when exposed to a poison like lead.

So what happens now is, when you add these DNA-modified proteins to a water sample, if there's a toxin in that water, it starts to glow. The more the toxin in the water increases, the more it glows. It's like magic!

A summary of modern technologies

Some of these modern technologies that have emerged as solutions to the world's water crisis are summarized in the table below.

Technology How it Works Key Benefit
Desert HarvesterUsing metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to absorb water vapor even from very dry air and produce pure water. Water can be produced anywhere, without electricity or large infrastructure.
Bio-Brain Toxin Detector Biosensors of genetically modified microorganisms glow in the presence of toxins in water. Being able to quickly and easily test water safety.
Error-Proof Chlorine-Dispenser Without electricity, automatically mixing the correct amount of chlorine into the water using the Venturi effect. Minimize human error and disinfect water regularly.
Shock Water Therapy Removing heavy metals such as lead from water through shock electrodialysis. Only harmful heavy metals can be removed without removing essential minerals from the water.

Some more surprising solutions

The chlorine machine that leaves no room for error

Chlorine is a powerful disinfectant that kills germs in water. But it can be tricky to use properly. When you add chlorine tablets, you can sometimes end up with too much or too little. As a solution, researchers at the Tufts Institute of the Environment have developed a simple device that works without electricity .

It consists of two parts. A small box that is attached to the end of the water pipe, and a tank filled with liquid chlorine. When water flows rapidly through the pipe, a pressure difference is created inside this small box. This is called the Venturi effect . Due to this pressure difference, the right amount of chlorine is automatically drawn from the chlorine tank and mixed with the water. This way, the water is always clean, without any human error.

A method of removing lead by 'shocking' water

Due to the severe health crisis caused by lead in the water supply of the American city of Flint, a group of scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) developed a new method to remove heavy metals from water.

They used a technique called 'shock electrodialysis' . This involves using electricity to separate impurities in water. Lead is a very difficult substance to remove from water because it can stick to the walls of equipment in other ways. But this technique can remove 95% of the lead without removing essential minerals like sodium from the water. This purifies the water and leaves behind minerals that the body needs.

All these technologies show the power of science and innovation in addressing one of the greatest challenges facing humanity, the water crisis. These will go a long way in saving people from diseases caused by dirty water and building a healthy future. Therefore, it is our duty to understand how precious water is and use it sparingly.
