Our body has a defense system, like an army that protects a country. We call the special soldiers in this army antibodies . Their main job is to protect us from diseases by fighting off enemies, such as germs, bacteria, and viruses, called antigens , that enter the body from outside.

But imagine, what happens if sometimes these self-defense forces make a mistake and start attacking our own good, healthy cells instead of recognizing them as foreign enemies? That's the worst thing. The Coombs test basically checks whether there are any antibodies in our blood that can attack the red blood cells, or if they are already attacking them.

Simply put, this test looks to see if our own defenses (antibodies) are attacking our own red blood cells.

If the mother is carrying an Rh-positive baby again, the antibodies that were previously made are ready in the mother's blood, cross the placenta, and begin to attack and destroy the baby's red blood cells.
