Who are these guards within us?

Simply put, the immune system is a group of guards in our body. Like an army that protects a country. The main duty of this army is to identify enemies that enter our body from outside, destroy them, and protect us from diseases.

These enemies can be any germs like bacteria, viruses, fungi, etc. These germs enter our bodies in various ways. For example, if you touch a doorknob and rub your eyes with that same hand, the cold virus on it can enter your body. If you eat food that is not properly cleaned, the bacteria on it can enter your body.

Our immune system, like a bouncer, recognizes uninvited guests. Do you know how? Every cell in our body has a unique protein pattern on its surface, like a fingerprint. Our immune system reads this “fingerprint” and accurately identifies “this is one of us” and “this is someone else.”

White Blood Cells – The Backbone of Our Army

As soon as an external enemy is detected, the main soldiers of our defense force, the white blood cells , come into action. The sole goal of these soldiers is to destroy the invading germs.

These white blood cells are produced in our bone marrow. But their lifespan is short, ranging from a few days to a few weeks. So our bodies are constantly producing new white blood cells. There are different types of them, but they all have the same purpose – to fight infections .

Where are these soldiers stationed?

These security guards, ready for duty, are stationed in various places on our bodies, just like in military camps. Here are some of those places:

  • Thymus gland
  • Spleen
  • Tonsils
  • Lymph nodes
  • Small intestine
  • Adenoids

Lymphatic System – The Highway of Our Defense Forces

The lymphatic system in your body is like a highway system designed for our defense forces (white blood cells) to travel throughout the body.

You may have noticed that when you get sick, the lumps (nodules) on your neck, armpits, and groin swell up. This is nothing to worry about. It means that your immune system is going into battle and working at its best!

These lymph nodes are like filters in our immune system. They trap and destroy things like germs and dead cells that enter the body, and cleanse the body.

How is this battle really going?

When the immune system recognizes an enemy, white blood cells surround the germ and engulf or destroy it. In addition, our body produces special proteins called antibodies . These antibodies are like keys made specifically for the germ, which attach to it and inactivate it.

Our immune system gets stronger with experience. Here's how it works:

Context Body's Response
When a germ enters the body for the first time It takes several days for the immune system to recognize this new enemy, find its weak spots, and make antibodies to fight it. During this time, you may experience symptoms like fever and cold.
When the same germ enters a second time Now our system "remembers" this enemy. So we use the weapons we've developed earlier to destroy him very quickly. You might not even feel sick. Mission successful!

This memory is the basis for how vaccines work. A vaccine introduces a killed or weakened germ into the body, training our immune system to recognize the enemy and fight it before the actual disease develops.

So, the next time you get a little sick, don't panic. Remember, there's a super army inside your body, fighting a great battle for you, unseen. To help them, all you have to do is drink plenty of water, eat nutritious foods, and get plenty of rest. However, if your symptoms are severe or don't improve in a few days, be sure to see your doctor for advice.

Take-Home Message

  • Our immune system is a natural defense force that protects us by fighting germs.
  • White blood cells are the main soldiers of this army. They destroy invaders.
  • Swelling of the ankles when you are sick is a good sign that your immune system is working. However, if the swelling persists, it is important to seek medical advice.
  • After a first infection, our body can “remember” that germ and fight it off more quickly and efficiently the next time.
  • A healthy lifestyle (good diet, exercise, enough sleep) can keep your immune system strong.
