So proton therapy is a great help in avoiding such complications.

How does the treatment work?

1. Simulation Session: A few days before your first treatment, you will be taken to this session. Here, the radiation team will mark the exact area on your body where the treatment will be given. This may be done by drawing lines with a permanent marker or by applying small dots, similar to tattoos.
2. During treatment: You will need to lie still on the bed during the treatment. If you move, the radiation beam may miss the cancer. You may be placed in a special frame to keep you still. A treatment session may last about 30 minutes.

Is this treatment available in Sri Lanka?
Proton therapy requires very large, specialized, and expensive machines called cyclotrons or synchrotrons. Therefore, not every country or hospital in the world has this facility.
Since this is a very advanced and new technology, this treatment may not be widely available in Sri Lanka at the moment. However, as technology advances, this facility will come to our country in the future.
