What happens with Mindful Eating?
We all eat several times a day. But how many of us actually pay attention to what we are eating and enjoy it? Most of the time, we eat while watching TV, on our phones, or thinking about a thousand other things. ``Mindful Eating`` is the complete opposite of that. It means that when you eat, you give your full attention to the food, eating slowly, without fuss, enjoying its taste, smell, and texture. When you eat this way, you can get the most out of your food. Also, you can feel how much you are eating and how full your stomach is. Imagine that you are eating an orange. You can do this with your eyes open or closed.- First, take your orange and turn it over in your hand. See how it feels in your hand. Maybe it's a little rough, maybe it's smooth. Does it feel heavy? Think about it for a moment.
- Now hold the orange up to your nose and take a good sniff. What kind of smell does it give? Do you smell that sweet, perhaps slightly bitter, scent of the orange peel?
- If you have your eyes open, look closely at the orange. Look at its color, shape, and whether the peel has small bumps in some places, is it smooth, and does it feel soft when you press it.
- Next, slowly peel the orange. This is the best time. Put a piece in your mouth and taste it. Notice how it feels on your tongue, how it sticks to your teeth. Don't swallow it all at once, but rather savor the flavor, texture, and juiciness as you chew it slowly.
- Eat every bite of orange like this, slowly, paying full attention to the taste, smell, and feel. See how much of a difference you'll feel.
Should we practice keeping our mind in one place even when breathing? (Mindful Breathing)
Breathing is something we do all the time, unconsciously. So you can practice ``Mindful Breathing`` or mindful breathing anytime, anywhere. Whether you breathe loudly or slowly, you can be mindful at every moment. Your goal here should be to focus on your breath very lightly, without forcing it. You can practice this as shown below. While doing this, you can sit comfortably in a quiet place.- So, you can first sit comfortably, even in a chair, with your back straight, and relax. If possible, close your eyes.
- Now, as you breathe in and out normally, pay attention to it. Just watch your breath go in and out. Do you feel a little tickle as the air hits your nostrils?
- Also pay attention to the way your body moves slowly as you breathe. Do you feel your stomach or chest slowly rising and falling as you breathe?
- Sit like this for a few minutes, without thinking about anything else, just focusing on your breath. Notice how relaxed you feel just sitting there, breathing in and out.
- When you do that, all of a sudden your mind is not in one place. Your mind starts thinking about different things, running here and there. That's very normal, that's how the mind is. Don't worry about it. Very gently, bring your attention back to your breath. It's like talking to a naughty little child and bringing them back.
How to practice mindfulness while walking? (Mindful Walking)
Some people find it difficult to meditate while sitting in one place. It's hard to keep the mind in one place, and it feels like it's hard on the body. If you're one of those people, then ``Mindful Walking'' or walking mindfully will be a very good experience for you. Check out these methods.Let's take a slow walk (Slow Motion Walk)
This is a very simple thing to do.- Lift one leg and step forward as slowly as you can. Try to get a feel for which muscles help you maintain balance when you're standing on one leg.
- Then do the same with the other leg.
- See how slowly you can walk, paying full attention to every little sensation in your body. Take a breath in and out with each step.
How to walk with body awareness (Walking Body Scan)
This is also a very interesting experience.- As you walk, first focus your attention on your feet and toes. Feel everything that those parts feel, how they feel as you walk.
- Then slowly bring your attention to your ankles, to your knees, and gradually move up to your head.
- Pay close attention to how each part of your body feels as you walk.
Walking Meditation
You can choose a meditation technique that you like, perhaps a mantra meditation (we'll talk about this later), or a simple mindfulness meditation, and do it while walking instead of sitting. But is it better to close your eyes while doing this kind of meditation? Because you also need to keep your eyes on the road.Let's practice mindfulness with a calming word (Mindful Word/Mantra Meditation)
This exercise can be done as an alternative to, or in conjunction with, Mindful Breathing. It is also called ``Mantra Meditation''.- First, think of a word that brings you comfort and peace. This could be a word like " peace ," "love," "happiness," or "relaxation." Or it doesn't have to be a word at all, even a sound like "hmmmm" that brings you peace.
- Say that word in your mind, slowly, silently. Say that word in your mind as you breathe in and out. Keep your attention very lightly on that word.
- When you start to think of other things, without getting upset, gently bring your attention back to the word. Breathe slowly and calmly as you say the word in your mind.
- Try doing this for about a minute at first. Once you can do it easily, try doing it for about five minutes.
How important is it to be mindful while driving? (Mindful Driving)
We all know that driving safely requires concentration. But drivers can easily become distracted. This increases the risk of accidents. If you are a driver, practice this mindfulness skill as soon as you get in the car. This will help you stay focused while driving.- Before you start the car, pay attention to how you feel in the driver's seat. Is the seat comfortable? Is it soft, hard, cold, or hot to the touch? Take a slow breath and lean back into the seat.
- Focus your attention on your legs and see if you can easily place your feet on the pedals. Adjust the seat if necessary.
- Fasten your seat belt . Then say to yourself: "I am paying full attention when I drive. I am driving safely and well."
- Now turn your attention to the mirrors . Check the mirrors and adjust them if necessary.
- Take a slow breath and start the car. Now focus your attention on the things around the car. Are there people or cars around you? Keep that focus as you move forward.
- When driving, keep your attention on the road and your surroundings. Be aware of where you need to slow down and where you need to speed up.
- If you feel like your mind is wandering while driving, remind yourself, "I am driving now." If you still have trouble regaining your focus, or if you feel sleepy, please pull off the road and stop the vehicle until you are able to concentrate again. This is very important for your safety and the safety of others.
Remember, driving mindfully is the best way to protect your own life and the lives of others.
What else do you need to know about this?
As you practice mindfulness, the most important thing to remember is that it is not something you can achieve overnight. At first, these mindfulness exercises may feel a little difficult, and you may have trouble keeping your mind focused. This is normal. So give yourself some time to get used to these things before you expect results. As these exercises gradually become easier, be happy with the small victories you achieve. If you continue to practice these practices, you will notice that your ability to focus on things like schoolwork, studying, and listening to someone else improve. You will begin to feel more calm and patient in your daily life. You may find that you are able to deal with small problems better without getting stressed out.So, what you need to remember from all of this (Take-Home Message)
Okay, so what did you learn from these ``Mindfulness Exercises'' or these little things we do mindfully that we talked about today?- Mindfulness means being fully present in the present moment, paying attention to what you are doing. It's like a muscle, the more you practice it, the better it gets.
- You can practice this mindfulness not only while eating, breathing, walking, thinking about a word that comes to mind, but also while driving.
- It may be difficult to focus at first, but that's normal. Don't panic, and slowly bring your attention back to what you're doing.
- By incorporating these small habits into your life, you will greatly help reduce stress , create peace of mind, improve focus, and find joy in the little things in life .
