We all want to be happy and relaxed all day long, right? You know how much even a little sadness can affect us. But positive emotions, or positive emotions, are not just about making us feel good, they are actually very good for our body and mind. In fact, these positive emotions reduce stress, help us think about new things, and give us the strength to face problems. Research has found that we are at our best and work best when we experience positive emotions at least three times more often than when we experience negative emotions. That is, if you feel sad once a day, you need to have something to make you happy at least three times a day. So, do you want to add more happiness and positivity to your life? So let's look at three simple ways you can do it.
What are the good feelings you have? Let's write them down a little bit?
The first thing to do is to identify the positive emotions you already experience in your daily life. Make a small list. Write down all the happy feelings you remember, the feelings of love, the moments when you felt proud, the places where you had fun... If you have any new good feelings, add them to it.
Now look at the list you made. Think (or write if you can) about what activities, situations, or people you associate with each of these feelings. For example, think about:
- The feeling of pride you get when you win a sports competition.
- The happiness you felt when your friends remembered and congratulated you on your birthday.
- The amusement that came when you made a joke about your history, sir, and made the whole class laugh.
- The innocent joy that comes to your heart when a little child looks at you and smiles.
- The satisfaction you feel when you help someone.
- The joy that comes when you receive a positive response for your hard work.
- The peace that comes to mind when you see a beautiful flower or a sunset.
Keeping a record of the good feelings you feel in this way makes us more aware of the positive things we already experience. It also helps us to clearly identify the situations, people, and activities that bring us those feelings. Sometimes, if we think a little before going to bed at night after a day, we can remember things like, 'Oh... I felt happy today because of this, didn't I?', 'I felt so proud of myself.' That's also a good way to do this. Imagine, at the end of the day, you take a small book and write down things like, 'This morning, I felt loved when my mother spoke to me,' 'This evening, I laughed so hard while talking to my friend, it was so much fun,' 'I felt so satisfied when my family said that the food I cooked was delicious.' After a while, you will realize how many things in your life there are to be happy about, perhaps you didn't think about it that much before.
Let's choose a good feeling that you want more of and make it bigger?
Now that you have a little idea of what good feelings you feel, the next step is to choose a specific positive emotion that you would like to add more of to your life. Imagine you want to increase the feeling of 'joy'. Or the feeling of 'gratitude', or the joy of 'creativity'. Choose one that you like. Then, first think about the times when you felt that emotion, and what you did at that time. Write down as many things as you can.
It doesn't have to be big things at this time. Think about the small, simple things. Maybe there's a song that makes you happy. Every time you listen to it, it makes you feel a little happy, doesn't it? That's the kind of thing. Every time you feel happy, think about what caused it, and if possible, add that to that list.
Once you have identified what you want to increase and what triggers it, decide how you can incorporate those activities, or similar things, into your daily life. The most important thing is to choose realistic things that you can do every day. Maybe you can’t go for a walk on the beach every day. But, you can listen to a song that reminds you of a vacation and enjoy that joy, right? Imagine, if you hear a beautiful bird singing while drinking tea in the morning, that can bring a little happiness. Or, things like cooking and eating your favorite food, planting a small plant, or calling a friend and talking for a few minutes. The most important thing is to understand that this is your own journey. What brings you joy may not bring someone else joy. So, try to find what really brings you joy and peace, rather than looking at what other people are doing.
This is like saying we should eat 5 fruits and vegetables a day. It's good for our physical health. Doing one or two small, happy things like this a day is a good investment in our mental health !
Choose one or more daily activities that will make you feel more wanted in your life and commit to them. Set aside a little time in your day for these experiences. This is like a 'vitamin' for your mind. After a few days, you will notice the difference.
Let's create your own 'Positivity Treasure Chest'?
Sometimes we forget the way back to where we are happy, don't we? When we feel sad or disappointed, we think things like, 'Oh, will I never be happy?' That's when a 'positivity box' or 'positivity treasure chest' can help us a lot.
Do you know what this 'happy box' is? It's a collection of things that remind us of the good, happy experiences we've had. These reminders bring back to our minds the best times in our lives, our strengths, the joys we've had, the achievements we've had, the fun we've had, the books and songs that have been important to us, and the people who have been important to us. It's really like a 'treasure box' where we can find happiness in our hearts.
Start collecting things in your life that have brought you positive emotions and left you with good memories. Here are some examples:
- Photos of a beautiful trip you took or small souvenirs (like a ticket to Sigiriya, a photo from a trip you took with friends).
- An award or certificate that reminds you of an achievement you have achieved.
- A card or a little note from someone very special to you (a New Year's greeting card, some nice words written by a friend).
- A quote or line from a song that you love and that inspires you.
- Something that brings back a fond memory from your childhood (like a small toy, a book, something a friend gave you from school).
- A drawing, a creation that you made or drew.
- It doesn't matter if someone gives you a gift , even if it's small, what matters is its value.
- A photo of someone you respect and look up to.
Keep all of these in a file, binder, or pretty box where you can easily find them. Some people keep them neatly pinned to a board where they can see them all the time. Or you can make a collage or poster out of these things. The most important thing is to only choose things that really make you feel good and bring you joy. You can add new things to this at any time, remove things, or change them.
When you feel overwhelmed or frustrated, take a few minutes to look at this 'treasure box'. When you touch those things and recall the memories associated with them, you will begin to feel the joy, pride, and love you felt at that time again. This will help reduce the negative emotions in your mind and increase the positive ones. Even if you don't have time, just looking at this can add a little joy to your day.
So, what's the main thing to remember from what we've talked about?
When you try to add positive emotions to your life, that is, good things like happiness, satisfaction, and love, you will find that you are happier , more energetic, and more accomplished . Thinking about positive things every day, doing small things for them, is like a small investment. But the benefits that you will get throughout your life are very big.
Remember, happiness in your heart is something you can cultivate. It just takes a little effort and dedication! All three of these methods are very simple, and you can start today. Give it a try, you'll be amazed!
