When you hear about violence at school, it's normal to feel scared and worried, like, 'Oh, will this ever happen to me or my friends?' In fact, it's natural to feel so sad and worried, and to try to understand why these things happen. We all want to go to school safely and happily. So, it's no wonder that when we hear about things like this, our hearts are broken.
Why do such violent things happen in schools?
To be honest, it's hard to pinpoint one reason why violence happens in schools. There's no single reason for this. Think about it, every child is different. The things they have in their minds, the problems they face, are all different.
Some children may act violently because they imitate what they see at home, on the street, or in some video games, movies, or TV shows . They may think that it is right, or that it is the way to solve problems. Sometimes, some children may struggle with mental health problems . That is, they cannot deal with their feelings of stress, anxiety, anger, or sadness. Then, they may find it difficult to control themselves.
Others resort to violence because they are constantly harassed by others (this is what we call bullying) . That is, others constantly make fun of them, scare them, and marginalize them. Then they can feel very sad and angry, as if they have been isolated and rejected by others. It is with these feelings that they sometimes react violently. These are just a few of the main reasons for resorting to violence.
But there is one thing that all experts agree on. That is, if children have easy access to dangerous weapons like guns or other violent weapons, it makes it easier for some people to attack things or people they don’t like. That means that when they have a weapon, even a small problem is more likely to escalate into a big fight. It’s like a small spark that can turn into a big fire.
What can I do about this? – Be aware of the warning signs!
Simply put, you can help stop these things too. How do you know? By being observant . Usually, when someone is close to turning violent, you can see some warning signs . It is very important for us to be a little aware of these. Because then we can give that person some help, or try to stop it before it becomes a big danger.
If you see things like this from a friend or someone else at school, it could be a warning sign:
- If you play with any type of weapon , or are always interested in or fond of weapons.
- If he always talks about violence or weapons , maybe that's what he always talks about.
- If you constantly talk about violent movies or violent video games with excessive enthusiasm , and try to imitate those things.
- If you harass others (this is what we call bullying) , if you scare them, if you threaten them.
- If you treat pets or other animals cruelly , if you abuse them. That is, if you behave in a heartless manner.
- If their behavior suddenly changes a lot , if they seem much angrier or sadder than before.
- If you try to stay away from society, be alone , and avoid friends.
If you see one or more of these signs, don't just ignore it. Tell an adult you trust right away . It could be a teacher, a parent, or a school counselor . A student who shows these signs may really need help and support. He or she may be in serious trouble or in pain. Remember, school safety is everyone's responsibility. A little information from you can help prevent a big disaster.
What if there is a question about school safety?
If you have any concerns, questions, or worries about school safety, talk to an adult who can listen to you and help you. It's important. Don't be afraid to talk . Many schools have Anonymous Reporting Systems that allow you to report bullying or signs of violence anonymously . This means that you can report these things to the authorities without giving your name. Then you have nothing to worry about. Find out if your school has such a system. Or, you can talk to your teachers and ask if they can set up such a system. Because sometimes children can be afraid to give their names. But it's important to report the problem.
What else can I do? – Let's make a difference!
Violence is an issue that many students are deeply concerned about and think about. They are passionate about reducing violence in their schools, in their neighborhoods, in their friendships, and in their families. Sometimes, they may even have personal experiences of how violence has affected their lives. So know that you are not alone.
Some schools have programs where children come together to share their experiences and discuss solutions to these problems. Imagine a place where children like you come together and ask, 'How can we face this problem? What can we do?' A lot of good ideas can come from places like this.
For example, in some places there are programs like 'Do the Write Thing'. What happens is, children get together with a teacher, talk about this violence, write about it, and do activities that can make a positive difference in society. If you think, 'Oh, this kind of program would be great for our school,' you can talk to a teacher that you trust and think could be a mentor for this kind of work. You can work together and explore this further. Maybe with your small idea, you can make a big difference in the school.
Remember, you are not alone. Your words and actions have great power. You too can make a big difference with small things.
Another thing is to learn to respect each other . Everyone is different. Everyone has different opinions. But, if we all learn to respect each other and think from the other person's perspective, we can reduce the number of problems that arise. If you see someone feeling isolated and alone, talk to them and help them. It is everyone's responsibility to create a friendly, kind environment at school. Then everyone can be happy.
Sometimes, it's hard to understand the causes of violence, but if we all come together, we can confront it and reduce it. Your safety, as well as the safety of others, is very important. So, never be afraid to speak up for what's right. Your voice has great value.
