Sometimes we have to face very sad experiences in life. A miscarriage is one such very painful and emotional experience. After such an event, doctors use various methods to remove the remaining tissue in the uterus, that is, to completely cleanse the uterus. Today we are talking about a special medicine used in such a situation. That is Dinoprostone.
What is Dinoprostone (Prostaglandin E2)?
Simply put, Dinoprostone is a drug that helps the uterus contract . It belongs to a chemical group called Prostaglandin E2. Think of it like during childbirth, the uterus contracts to push the baby out. This drug does the same thing. But here the goal is to help expel the remaining tissue in the uterus after a miscarriage.
This medication comes in the form of a vaginal suppository. It is used not only after a miscarriage, but also to treat a condition called a ``benign hydatidiform mole'', which we commonly refer to as a ''grapevine pregnancy.''
The most important thing is that this medicine is only used in a hospital or clinic, under medical supervision. You will not be allowed to take it home.
Things you need to tell your doctor before taking this medicine
Before your doctor decides to give you this medicine, he or she will need to know your complete health history. This is because it can be risky to give this medicine to someone with certain medical conditions. Therefore, if you have any of the following, be sure to tell your doctor about it.
| Condition/Patient History | Description |
|---|---|
| Infections | Any current infection in the vagina, uterus, or pelvic area. |
| Problems related to pregnancy | If you had a difficult delivery in a previous pregnancy, if you had a cesarean section, if you have scars from surgery on the uterus, or if you have a low-lying placenta (placenta previa). |
| Heart, lung and blood related diseases | High blood pressure, heart disease, respiratory diseases like asthma, anemia (blood deficiency). |
| Other medical conditions | Liver disease, kidney disease, glaucoma, seizure disorder. |
| Allergies | If you have an allergy to dinoprostone, other prostaglandins, other medicines, foods or substances. |
| Other points | If you are a breastfeeding mother, have more than six children, or have unusual vaginal bleeding. |
How to use this medicine and what to be careful about
As mentioned before, this is not a medicine you can use at home.
- This pill is inserted into your vagina by a medical professional (a doctor or nurse).
- After the injection, you will be instructed to lie down in bed for about 10 minutes . You will be closely monitored during this time.
- This medicine may interact with other medications, especially oxytocin, which causes uterine contractions. So tell your doctor about all the medications you take, including any supplements you use.
- If you develop a fever, chills, stomach pain, foul-smelling vaginal discharge, or heavy bleeding , even a few days after taking the medicine, see a doctor immediately.
What if the dose increases?
Since this is administered under controlled conditions in a hospital, the risk of overdose is very low. However, if you think you may have had an overdose, inform the medical staff immediately. Alternatively, you can call the National Poisons Information Centre at the Colombo National Hospital . In an emergency, go to the nearest Emergency Treatment Unit (ETU).
What are the possible side effects?
Like all medicines, Dinoprostone can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Some side effects are serious, while others are mild.
