70-year-old treatment and new hope

For decades, the only treatment for CAH was to replace the body's low levels of the hormone cortisol with high doses of steroids , such as hydrocortisone. However, taking these high doses of steroids for a long time can cause a number of side effects. The most common of these are weight gain, high blood pressure, weak bones, and stunted growth in children.

How does this new drug (Crinecerfont) work?

This is the most important thing. Unlike the old treatment, this new medicine works in a completely different way.

'Crinesurfont' does not add hormones from outside. Instead, this drug goes directly to the control center of the brain (the pituitary gland) and blocks the release of the unwanted signal (ACTH) that stimulates the adrenal glands.
