When we see a newborn baby, our hearts are filled with joy, right? Childbirth is one of the most beautiful and unique experiences in a mother's life. After the baby is born, the umbilical cord is clamped and cut. However, have you heard of a different method that has been talked about among some parents recently? It is called 'Lotus Birth'. In this, the baby's umbilical cord is not cut, but is left attached to the placenta until it separates on its own in a few days. Is this really good for the baby? Let's talk about this in more depth.
Simply put, what is this 'Lotus Birth'?
'Lotus birth' refers to the practice of leaving the baby's umbilical cord attached to the placenta, without cutting it, after delivery, until it dries out naturally and falls off. To be precise, the baby, umbilical cord, and placenta are still attached for a few days.
It usually takes between 5 and 15 days for the umbilical cord to detach on its own. So, throughout this time, the placenta needs to be carefully cared for and cared for. This is a very different experience than a normal birth.
What are the advantages of this method?
According to those who follow the 'lotus' birth method, they believe that it provides several benefits to the baby. Their idea is that since the baby and the placenta are two parts made of the same cells, it is not good to suddenly break that connection.
The main things they believe in are:
- The baby's immune system becomes stronger.
- The baby receives more oxygen and nutrition from the placenta.
- The baby becomes a calmer, less anxious child.
But the most important thing here is that none of these benefits have been proven by adequate medical research . Therefore, as doctors, we do not recommend this method.
But there is another thing called 'Delayed Cord Clamping'. That is, cutting the umbilical cord between 30 seconds and 2 minutes after the baby is born. This is something that has been scientifically proven to increase the baby's blood volume and reduce things like iron deficiency. It is something that doctors recommend. But 'lotus' birth is completely different, where the umbilical cord is kept in place for several days.
But, what is the real risk?
This is something we all need to understand. Once the placenta and umbilical cord are delivered from the uterus, they no longer receive a blood supply. In other words, they become lifeless, dead tissue .
Think about it, what happens when you leave a piece of meat out in the open? It spoils, bacteria grows on it. The same thing happens to the placenta. Dead tissue is the perfect place for bacteria to grow.
If an infection develops in the placenta in this way, the infection can easily travel through the umbilical cord and enter the baby's body. Because a newborn baby's immune system is not yet fully developed, even a minor infection is more likely to develop into a very serious condition (sepsis) . This can even be life-threatening for the baby.
There is no accepted method for preserving the placenta. Some people put it in a bag, some rub it with herbs and oils. But none of these have been scientifically proven to be safe.
Things to consider if you choose this method:
If you and your family decide to opt for this 'lotus' birth method, you need to proceed with the utmost care and caution.
- The baby should be dressed in loose clothing that is not tight around the umbilical cord.
- Always keep the placenta close to the baby. Don't let it pull away and put pressure on the umbilical cord.
- Always take care of the umbilical cord when breastfeeding and holding your baby.
- Always check the placenta or umbilical cord for signs of infection, or for accidental cord breakage.
- If you later decide you want to cut the umbilical cord, never cut it at home or let it stretch and break . Immediately see your baby's doctor and have it cut by a qualified doctor.
When to see a doctor immediately
Whether you follow a 'lotus' birth or not, it is very important to see a doctor within 1-3 days of birth. If you notice any of the following symptoms, see a doctor immediately or go to a hospital's Emergency Department (ETU) without delay .
| Warning Sign | Things to watch out for |
|---|---|
| Changes around Pekaniya | Redness, swelling, warmth, or odor around the navel. |
| Baby's body temperature | Fever (temperature greater than 38 Celsius / 100.4 Fahrenheit). |
| Drinking milk and defecating | Irregular bowel movements (less than 8-12 times in 24 hours) or decreased bowel movements within the first three days. |
| Sleep and behavior | The baby is constantly sleepy, difficult to wake, or has a change in behavior. |
| Placental damage | The placenta shows signs of damage, rupture, or deterioration. |
A newborn baby is a very sensitive person. Their body is not yet fully adapted to the world. Therefore, even a problem that seems minor to an adult can have a very serious impact on a baby. Therefore, never take risks with your baby's health.
Take-Home Message

- The biggest and most serious risk of this method is the possibility of the baby contracting a serious infection through the placenta, which is a dead tissue.
- None of the benefits that this method provides to the baby have been scientifically proven.
- If you follow this method, you should be very vigilant for signs of infection and seek medical advice immediately in any suspicious cases.
- Before making any decisions regarding your baby's health, it is important to talk to your doctor and seek proper medical advice.
