Do you have a latex allergy? Let's talk about it!

You may have noticed that when you use rubber gloves, blow up a balloon, or touch something that contains rubber, some people's skin turns red, itches, and itches. While many people think this is normal, this is actually a condition that requires medical attention. Today we are talking about this rubber allergy , or Latex Allergy . While this may be a minor annoyance for some people, for others it can be a serious condition that can affect their lives.

Simply put, what is Latex Allergy?

Latex Allergy is when our immune system overreacts to certain proteins in natural rubber latex. Think of it this way: our immune system is like our country’s army. Its job is to identify and fight against foreign invaders like germs and viruses. But sometimes this system goes wrong. Even though these proteins in rubber are actually harmless, the immune system thinks they are a dangerous enemy. So, it goes to fight them off, causing allergy symptoms like itching, hives, and difficulty breathing.

The exact cause of this is not yet known, but doctors believe that continuous exposure to rubber products may be one reason.

Who is most at risk of developing this allergy?

It has been found that between 5% and 10% of healthcare workers have some form of latex allergy. In addition, the following people are also at increased risk:

  • People who have undergone frequent surgeries: Because a large number of rubber-containing instruments are used during surgeries.
  • People with congenital conditions such as spina bifida.
  • People with any deformities of the bladder or urinary tract.
  • People who use a urinary catheter for a long time.
  • People who already have other conditions such as allergies, asthma, or eczema .
  • People who are allergic to certain foods such as apples, bananas, carrots, chestnuts, kiwi, watermelon, avocado, pineapple, and tomatoes (we will talk about this in detail later).
  • People working in the rubber industry.
  • People who use condoms frequently.

What are the types of latex allergic reactions?

There are three main types of reactions our body has to latex. These are different from each other.

The most important thing is to recognize these types of reactions, because some of them can be dangerous.

Reaction Type Description and characteristics
1. Irritant Contact Dermatitis
(Skin injury )
This is the least dangerous condition. It is not actually an allergy. The chemicals in rubber gloves can cause skin dryness, itching, burning, and peeling. This usually begins 12-24 hours after contact with the rubber.
2. Allergic Contact Dermatitis
(Allergic contact dermatitis)
This is a delayed allergic reaction. It is caused by additives used in the production of rubber. The symptoms are similar to those above, but are more severe, spread to more areas of the body , and last longer. Symptoms can appear between 1-4 days after contact with rubber.
3. Immediate Allergic Reaction
(Immediate allergic reaction)
This is the most serious and dangerous condition. Symptoms may include a runny nose, red, watery eyes, stomach ache, hives, and severe itching. In rare cases, rapid heartbeat, shaking, chest pain, difficulty breathing, low blood pressure, and a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction called anaphylaxis can occur.
Emergency! - If you have severe symptoms (difficulty breathing, chest pain, facial swelling), call your doctor immediately or go to the nearest hospital Emergency Department (ETU).

What are the treatments and how can I protect myself?

There is no specific cure for latex allergy. The best thing to do is to avoid anything containing rubber completely.

  • For minor reactions: For minor skin irritations such as itching and redness, your doctor may recommend antihistamines , corticosteroid creams, or ointments such as calamine.
  • For severe reactions: In case of a severe reaction, immediate hospitalization is required. There, epinephrine injection, intravenous fluids (IV fluids) and medical supervision are provided.

If you know you have a latex allergy, it is very important to wear a medical alert bracelet or ID card to let others know in case of an emergency. You should also always carry two epinephrine injections, if recommended by your doctor.

What is the connection between latex and certain foods?

This is something that many people don't know, but it's very important. Between 30% and 50% of people with latex allergies are also allergic to certain fruits and vegetables. This is called a cross-reaction .

Simply put, the structure of the proteins in some of these foods is very similar to the allergenic proteins in rubber. This causes our immune system to get confused between the two. Just as it reacts to rubber, it also reacts to these foods.

Foods that can cause cross-reactions with latex:

  • Avocado
  • Banana
  • Kiwi
  • Chestnut
  • Papaya
  • Pineapple
  • Tomato
  • Potato

If you have an allergy to this type of food, you may also have an unknowing latex allergy. Therefore, it is very important to inform your doctor and dentist about this.

What should you do when you go to see a doctor?

If you have a latex allergy, be sure to inform your doctor, dentist, or hospital staff in advance.

1. Give at least 24 hours notice: Call at least the day before your appointment and tell them about your allergies so they can prepare things like latex-free gloves.

2. Make an appointment in the morning: Make an appointment for the first time of the day. If latex gloves have been used on other patients that day, there may be particles in the air. This risk is lower if you go first thing in the morning.

3. If you are hospitalized: If you have to stay in the hospital, you will usually be given a special room that is free of products containing latex.
