Imagine that you are in a car and suddenly hit the brakes hard, or you fall while playing sports. Your head suddenly jerks back and forth, doesn't it? The pain and stiffness in your neck... Oh, it's hard to bear. Most of the time, we call this condition a "sprained neck." The medical term for this is Whiplash or Neck Strain . What happens in this situation is that the muscles in the neck and the tendons that connect them to the bones are stretched and damaged due to the sudden jerk.
This condition is not limited to car accidents. It can also occur frequently in people who play contact sports like football. Sometimes we confuse the two conditions `Neck Strain` and `Neck Sprain`. There is a slight difference between the two. A `Strain` is an injury to a muscle or `tendon`. A `Sprain` is an injury to the ligaments that connect bones to each other. But you may not notice the difference. Because the causes, symptoms, and treatments for both are very similar.
What are the symptoms of Whiplash?
Whiplash pain is not just a one-off. See if you have these symptoms:
- Severe neck pain, stiffness, and difficulty turning the neck . The neck muscles may feel stiff and knotted, like they are made of stone .
- Pain when bending the head to the sides, forwards and backwards.
- Pain or stiffness when turning the neck to look at the sides of the shoulders.
- Tenderness when touching or pressing on a certain area of the neck.
- A headache that starts at the scalp, that is, above the neck and moves towards the forehead.
Sometimes this pain comes right after the accident. But for some people, it can take a day or two for the neck to start hurting. So you need to be a little careful.
Very important: Sometimes a neck injury like this can also cause a concussion. Concussion is a serious condition. So if you have neck pain , a headache that is getting worse, a feeling of weakness, difficulty speaking, dizziness, vomiting, excessive sleepiness, or loss of consciousness , go to a hospital's Emergency Department (ETU) immediately.
Your doctor will examine you carefully to determine the exact cause of your condition. He or she may also order tests such as X-rays and CT scans (Computed Tomography scans) to make sure there are no other problems.
What are the treatments for whiplash?
The good news is that this condition often resolves on its own over time. But there are things you can do to help it heal faster.
| Treatment method | What to do |
|---|---|
| Ice melting | Apply ice to your neck as soon as possible after the injury. This will reduce pain and swelling. Apply for about 15 minutes, every 3-4 hours, for 2-3 days. Wrap the ice in a thin cloth to avoid damaging the skin. |
| Painkillers | Only take painkillers if your doctor recommends them. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as paracetamol, ibuprofen, or naproxen can help relieve pain. However, these medications can have side effects, so don't take them without your doctor's advice. If you are taking other medications or have other medical conditions, be sure to ask your doctor before taking them. |
| Neck Collar | Only use a neck brace or cervical collar to support your neck if your doctor recommends it. However, it is not recommended to wear these continuously. This can weaken the neck muscles. It is best to use them for a short period of time, such as 2-3 hours a day. |
| Moist heat burns | Only after applying ice for the first 2-3 days , and once the swelling has subsided, apply moist heat to the neck. You can use a towel soaked in hot water or take a hot bath. |
| Physical Therapy | Many people benefit from physical therapy. A physical therapist can teach you exercises to strengthen and flex your neck muscles. |
| Other treatments | In some severe cases, your doctor may recommend treatments such as trigger-point injections or cervical facet steroid injections. Rarely, if other treatments fail, a treatment called radiofrequency ablation (RFA) may be used. Ultrasound therapy and massage may also be helpful. |
How long does it take for neck pain to subside?
The time it takes to recover varies depending on the severity of the Whiplash injury . A normal condition will heal in a few days. However, some severe cases may take weeks or longer to heal. Remember, everyone recovers at a different rate.
Once your acute symptoms have subsided, your doctor will likely tell you to start rehabilitation exercises. These will help strengthen and stretch your neck muscles. This will help you recover faster and reduce the risk of a recurrence. However, don't start any exercises without talking to your doctor first.
Never rush. If you return to heavy work or sports before you are fully recovered, you may develop chronic neck pain and become permanently disabled.
Before you return to your normal activities, see if you can do these things without pain:
- Can you look at both sides of your shoulder without pain or stiffness?
- Can you bend your head fully forward and backward without pain or stiffness?
- Can you bend your head from side to side without pain or stiffness?
Once you can do these things, the doctor will allow you to return to normal activities.
Can whiplash be prevented?
It's hard to prevent an accident from happening. That's true. But there are things you can do to reduce the risk.
- Exercise to keep your neck muscles strong and flexible. This is especially important if you have had this condition before.
- People who sit in the same position all day (e.g., office workers) should get up at least once an hour and do a little neck stretching or exercise. This will improve blood flow to the neck muscles and reduce stiffness.
Take-Home Message
- Whiplash is an injury to the neck muscles caused by a sudden jerk of the head due to an accident, fall, or sports.
- Symptoms may appear immediately after the accident or a day or two later.
- If you have symptoms such as a severe headache, a feeling of weakness, and difficulty speaking along with neck pain, it could be a sign of a concussion. Go to the ETU immediately.
- Most of the time, this condition is cured with rest, ice, and simple treatments.
- Always follow your doctor's instructions for medications and exercise.
- Do not rush into heavy work or sports until you are completely healed.
