Our ear is mainly composed of three parts. They are: 1. Outer Ear 2. Middle Ear 3. Inner Ear Each of these parts has a specific function.
1. Outer Ear: The first gateway to sound
The outer ear is the part of the ear that we can see from the outside. It also has several main parts.
This is the part of the ear that you can see and touch. It is made of cartilage and a soft tissue called
cartilage on the inside. The eardrum has a very special shape. It works like a funnel. That is, the main function of the eardrum is to collect
the sound waves from around you and direct them into the ear. Imagine, when someone is talking to you, it is as if it is preparing a path for the sound to go right into the ear.
- Ear Canal or Auditory Canal:
Sound waves collected by the eardrum then travel along the auditory canal. This is like a small tube. This tube ends at the eardrum. Special glands in the auditory canal produce a substance called
earwax or cerumen .
Earwax is not just a type of dirt. It provides great protection to our ears. It prevents things like dust and germs from entering the ear. It also reduces the dryness of the skin in the ear. Earwax gradually comes out of the ear on its own. Therefore , it is not a good idea to constantly pick at your ears.
- Eardrum (Eardrum or `Tympanic Membrane`):
At the end of the auditory tube is a very thin membrane. It's like the skin of a drum. This is called the eardrum. When sound waves from outside hit this eardrum, it starts to
vibrate . This eardrum is the boundary between the outer ear and the middle ear.
2. Middle Ear: A small machine that amplifies sound.
On the other side of the eardrum is the middle ear. It's like a small chamber filled with air. The main job of the middle ear is
to amplify the vibrations coming from the eardrum and send them to the inner ear. There are some really amazing things here that help with this.
- Auditory bones (Ossicles):
These are the three
smallest bones in our body. They are:
- Malleus (hammer)
- Incus (Anvil)
- Stapes (staples)
These three bones are connected to each other, acting like a small lever system. When the eardrum vibrates, the tympanic membrane vibrates first. From there, the vibration travels to the ossicles, and from the ossicles to the auricle. As the vibration travels in this way, its strength increases greatly.
There is a small tube that connects the middle ear to the back of our throat. This is called the auditory tube. Its main function is to equalize
the air pressure on both sides of the eardrum. Imagine that when you are climbing a mountain or flying in an airplane, your ears feel like they are closing. When we yawn or swallow, that feeling disappears. Then this auditory tube opens, and the pressure in the middle ear equalizes with the outside pressure. One reason why young children often get ear infections is that their auditory tube is a little short and horizontal, so germs from the throat can easily enter the middle ear.
3. Inner Ear: A very complex, amazing piece of work!
The amplified vibrations from the middle ear then travel to the inner ear. This is
the most complex part of the ear. There are two main structures here: one related to hearing, and the other related to balance.
This is a snail-shell-shaped bony structure. It is filled with fluid. Also, thousands of very fine
hair cells are arranged in rows inside it. When the stapes vibrates, those vibrations travel through the fluid inside the cochlea. Then this fluid moves, and those hair cells begin to bend. Amazingly, when these hair cells bend, those sound vibrations are converted into
electrical signals !
The electrical signals produced by those hair cells travel through the auditory nerve to our brain. It's the brain that analyzes these signals and makes us understand things like, "Oh, this is a song," "This is Mom talking," etc.
- The system that controls balance (Vestibular System):
The inner ear is also home to the part of our body that controls our balance. This is
called the semicircular canals.And other delicate structures belong to it. When you move your head, when you move your body from side to side, this system detects those movements and sends them to the brain. Based on those messages, the brain controls the muscles in our body and keeps us from falling. If you sometimes feel dizzy (`(Vertigo)`), it could be due to some problem with the balance system in the inner ear.

- Ear Infections:
- Outer Ear Infection (`Otitis Externa`): Also known as "Swimmer's Ear", this is an infection of the skin in the ear canal. It can occur in people who frequently swim or keep their ears moist. There may be pain, itching, and possibly a discharge from the ear.
- Middle ear infection (`Otitis Media`): This is the most common ear infection in young children. It can occur with colds and throat infections. It occurs when the Eustachian tube becomes blocked and germs accumulate in the middle ear. There may be severe ear pain, fever, and sometimes pus draining from the ear.
Earwax is a protective layer for the ear, but for some people, earwax can grow too much, or it can become stuck inside the ear like a lump instead of coming out. This can cause the ear to feel heavy, reduce hearing, and sometimes cause dizziness.
- Ringing in the ears (`Tinnitus`):
Tinnitus is the sensation of hearing a ringing or buzzing sound in your ears, even when there is no other sound around you. There can be many causes for this. Exposure to loud noises, aging, certain diseases, and certain medications can also be causes.
Hearing loss can occur gradually or suddenly. There are many reasons for this. Hearing loss can occur naturally with age. It can also be caused by things like continuous exposure to loud noises, untreated ear infections, certain genetic factors, and injuries to the ears.
A feeling of spinning or spinning around you. This may be due to a problem with the balance system (Vestibular System) in the inner ear.
How to take care of our ears?

- How to clean ears:
