What really happens with this medicine?

Simply put, terazosin is a drug that belongs to a class of drugs called alpha blockers. It does two main things.

1. Controlling high blood pressure:

Imagine a water pipe that is very tight and blocked. Then it takes a lot of pressure to get water through that pipe, right? The blood vessels in our body are the same. When they are narrowed and tight, the heart has to work harder to pump blood through them. This is what we call high blood pressure , or " high blood pressure ."

What Terazosin does is relax those constricted blood vessels a little. That is, it widens them a little. Then the heart can pump blood throughout the body without having to work hard, with less pressure. This is how blood pressure is controlled.

2. Reducing symptoms of enlarged prostate:

This is only true for men. As men age, the prostate gland in some men becomes slightly larger. This gland is located below the bladder, surrounding the urethra . So when it gets bigger, the urethra becomes tight, making it difficult to pass urine. Symptoms may include the need to urinate frequently, a feeling of having to urinate even after you've finished, and a weak urethra.

Terazosin also relaxes the muscles in the prostate and bladder neck, reducing the pressure on the urethra and making it easier to pass urine.

Things to tell your doctor before starting medication

The more complete your doctor has of your health, the safer they can treat you. So be sure to tell them about these things before starting this medication.

• If you have had an allergic reaction to Terazosin or any other similar medicine.
• If you have allergies to other foods, dyes in medicines, or preservatives .
• If you are pregnant , trying to get pregnant , or breast-feeding .

How should I use the medicine?

• This medicine is a pill that you take by mouth. Take it exactly as your doctor prescribes, in the right dose, at the right time. It's best to get into the habit of taking it at the same time every day if possible.
• This can be taken with or without food. However, some people may experience mild stomach upset if taken without food. If this happens, eat some food before taking the medicine.

Things to keep in mind while taking the medicine

It is very important to think about your safety when using this medicine.

Dizziness and drowsiness

In the first few days after starting this medicine, when the dose is increased , on hot days, or after exercise, you may feel dizzy, light-headed, or drowsy . This is normal. This will gradually decrease as your body adjusts to the medicine.

• Therefore, stay away from activities that require a lot of attention, such as driving, working at heights, and operating machinery, until you understand how this medication affects your body.
• When you get up suddenly from a sitting position, or when you get up suddenly from a lying position, stand up straight. This is very important, especially if you are an elderly person. If you get up suddenly, you may become dizzy and fall.
• Avoid drinking alcohol completely while taking this medicine. Alcohol can make your dizziness and drowsiness worse.

• Check your blood pressure regularly. Ask your doctor what your normal blood pressure should be and at what level you should tell him.
• Ask your doctor before buying over-the-counter cough, cold, or pain medications. Some of the ingredients in these medications can increase your blood pressure.
• A dry mouth may occur. Chewing sugar-free gum, sucking on sugar-free candy, and drinking plenty of water throughout the day can help.
