❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What does HbA1c actually measure?
HbA1c measures the percentage of your haemoglobin (a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen) that is glycated, or coated with sugar. Because red blood cells live for about 3 months, it reflects your average blood sugar levels over the past 8–12 weeks.
What's a healthy HbA1c level?
For most adults, a level below 5.7% (39 mmol/mol) is considered normal. 5.7% to 6.4% (39–47 mmol/mol) indicates prediabetes, and 6.5% (48 mmol/mol) or higher on two separate tests indicates diabetes.
How is HbA1c different from a daily blood sugar test?
Daily prick tests (finger stick) give you a "snapshot" of your blood sugar at that exact moment. HbA1c provides a "video" or long-term average, making it essential for diagnosing and managing diabetes.

HbA1c Units and Average Glucose: Understanding the Numbers

If you're managing diabetes, you'll likely see two different numbers for your blood sugar: your **HbA1c** (given during lab tests) and your **estimated Average Glucose (eAG)** (calculated from the HbA1c and similar to what your daily monitor shows). Converting between these units helps you and your doctor better understand your long-term glucose management.

The ADAG Study and eAG

The **estimated Average Glucose (eAG)** was developed following the A1C-Derived Average Glucose (ADAG) study, which found a strong linear relationship between HbA1c and average daily glucose levels. This allow for the simple conversion: **eAG (mg/dL) = 28.7 × HbA1c − 46.7**. This means an HbA1c of 7% corresponds to an average daily glucose of approximately 154 mg/dL.

Switching Between % and mmol/mol

In many countries (like the UK), the standard for HbA1c reporting has switched from percentages (called the DCCT standard) to **mmol/mol** (the IFCC standard). Our converter handles both, ensuring you can understand your lab results no matter what country you're in.

⚕️ Medical Disclaimer: Converters provide mathematical estimates. Lab results for HbA1c can be affected by conditions like anaemia or some haemoglobin variants. Always consult your endocrinologist for diabetes diagnosis and treatment guidance.
