What are the symptoms of this?
The most dangerous thing about this condition is that the symptoms appear suddenly, without even having time to think. The main symptoms are:
- Sudden onset of severe difficulty breathing .
- A sudden and dangerous drop in blood pressure (Hypotension).
- Excessive and uncontrolled bleeding from the uterus or from a cesarean section wound.
- Feeling very nervous, afraid , or anxious.
- The baby's heartbeat is unusually slow or changes.
- Feeling cold, shivering, and having seizures .
- Heart failure or sudden loss of consciousness (Cardiac Arrest).
The cause of this excessive bleeding is the breakdown of the entire system that helps the body to clot blood. This is called Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC) in medicine. What happens in this is that the blood loses its ability to clot. As a result, the bleeding becomes so severe that it cannot be stopped. Also, difficulty breathing, damage to the lungs and the inability to breathe can occur, which is called Acute Respiratory Failure .
How is this condition treated?
Since this is a life-or-death situation, treatment begins in seconds. It is managed in a hospital's intensive care unit (ICU) or operating room. Here, it is not a single treatment, but a combination of several treatments depending on the patient's condition.
- Immediate Delivery: Doctors decide to deliver the baby as soon as possible, considering the lives of both the mother and the baby.
- Life-saving treatment (Resuscitation): If the mother becomes unconscious, oxygen is given while performing Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) .
- Mechanical Ventilation: If you have difficulty breathing, you are connected to a machine called a ventilator to help you breathe.
- Blood pressure and heart monitoring: Special catheters are inserted into the body's major veins and arteries to closely monitor things like blood pressure and heart function, second by second.
- Blood Transfusion: Due to excessive blood loss, large amounts of blood and blood components are given to replace lost blood and provide proteins (clotting factors) needed for blood clotting.
- Specialized medications: Various medications are given to restore low blood pressure, improve heart function, and stop bleeding by causing the uterus to contract.
All of this is done with the primary goal of saving the mother's life. Although the survival rate for the mother in this situation is low, early treatment can increase the chances of survival. The baby's survival rate is much higher (about 70%).
