We all want to keep our hair beautiful, right? Some people have straight hair, some have curly hair. Some have very thick hair, some have thin hair. But in addition to these things, there is something that affects the health of our hair, but we don't talk about it much. That is the porosity of the hair, or as it is called in English, Hair Porosity. This directly affects the appearance, texture, and health of your hair. If your hair is also high in porosity, it can be damaged quickly. But don't worry, if you take proper care of it, you can also have healthy, beautiful hair .
What is hair porosity?
Simply put, Hair Porosity is the ability of your hair shaft to absorb and retain water. This ability depends on the health of your hair's outermost layer (cuticle).
Imagine, if we take one of our hair strands, it has two or three main layers:
- The middle part (M ED ulla): This is located inside the hair shaft. It is a sponge-like tissue. However, this part may be missing in very thin hair.
- Cortex: This is the protein layer that gives the hair shaft its flexibility, or elasticity. This is also where the pigments that give your hair its color are located.
- Cuticle: This is the most important part. It is made up of a layer of cells, like the tiles of a roof, one on top of the other. When these tiles are well-laid out and tightly packed together, the hair is smooth and shiny. But if these cells burst or bulge, moisture can easily evaporate from them, damaging the hair.
The porosity of your hair can be a genetic trait, or it can change depending on the care you give your hair.
There are three main types of hair porosity:
Let's now see what these three types are and what their characteristics are. It will be much easier for you to understand this in a table.
| Porosity Type | Common features |
|---|---|
| Low Porosity |
|
| Normal Porosity | |
| High Porosity |
High porosity hair is caused by the damage to the outermost layer of hair called the cuticle, which is the outermost layer of hair. This causes pores to form, allowing water to enter and leave the hair very quickly. This condition is naturally more common in curly hair . In addition, excessive heat, bleaching, frequent combing, and exposure to UV rays from the sun can also cause this.
Is my hair high porosity? Should I test it at home?
If you're not sure about your hair type, there are two simple tests you can do at home. This will give you a rough idea.
| Test | How to do it and the result |
|---|---|
| Float Test | Take a clean, dry strand of hair (no shampoo or conditioner) and place it in a glass of room temperature water. Wait a few minutes.
|
| Spray Test | Spray some water onto clean, dry hair with a spray bottle.
|
In addition to these, there are also complex tests like `(Dynamic vapor sorption)` and `(Gas adsorption)` that are done in laboratories. But the two tests we can do at home are enough to give us a general idea.
How to properly care for high porosity hair?
The two main problems that people with high porosity hair face are hair damage and inability to retain moisture . So our main goal should be to lock in the moisture that is given to the hair.
Try the LOC method
This is a very popular method. LOC stands for Leave -in conditioner, Oil , and Cream .
1. Leave-in Conditioner: A type of conditioner that you apply to damp hair after washing. It doesn't wash out until the next time you wash your hair. Choose a lightweight type that suits your hair type.
2. Oil: Next, apply some oil to seal in the moisture. Remember, you don't need a lot, just a little . Avocado oil, argan oil, etc. are good. You can also use a little of our coconut oil for this.
3. Cream: Finally, use a styling cream. There are different types of creams for curly hair and straight hair. Choose one that suits your hair type.
A few other important points
- Reduce heat: Reduce the use of high-heat products like straightening and curling your hair as much as possible. These will further damage the damaged outer layer (cuticle).
- Be careful with chemical treatments: Frequent bleaching, dyeing, and straightening your hair can make your hair even drier.
- Be careful on humid days: In humid weather like Sri Lanka, avoid using products that contain `(Humectants)`. Humectants are substances that attract moisture from the environment. If you use these, your hair may become more frizzy and unruly.
- Get a protein treatment: Our hair is made up of a protein called ``Keratin.`` A protein treatment fills in the gaps in the outer layer of the hair shaft, smoothing it out and creating a protective layer. Getting a good protein treatment once a month can be very beneficial.
If you take care of these things and give your hair the love and care it needs, you can definitely maintain healthy, beautiful hair without having to worry about High Porosity. If you have any concerns or doubts, it is best to consult a dermatologist for advice.
