Standardizing Modern Clinical Terminology in Spoken Sinhala Patient Education to Prevent Diagnostic Delay in Sri Lanka

Abstract (English)

Automated machine translation of English medical portals into Sinhala frequently produces archaic, misleading, or clinically unsafe terminology. Because Sri Lankan laboratory reports, imaging studies, and prescriptions are issued in English while patient comprehension is primarily in Sinhala, dual-terminology patient education (pairing conversational spoken Sinhala explanations with exact English diagnostic terms) significantly improves patient literacy and timely specialist referral.
