Have you ever suddenly gotten out of bed or a chair and felt like everything around you was spinning? This experience is so uncomfortable that you can't even stand up, your head feels heavy, and you feel like you're going to vomit. This is what we call " Dizziness ". Is this just something else, or is it a symptom of some disease? Don't worry, we'll talk about it all clearly today.
What exactly is this dizziness?
Simply put, dizziness is a feeling of being off balance in our body. At this time, you may experience the following:
- Feeling very lightheaded, as if losing consciousness.
- Without body control, it feels like it's hard to stay in one place.
- Even though you're in one place, things around you, maybe the entire room, feel like they're spinning.
Sometimes this feeling goes away after a while. But for some people it can get worse. Along with this, other symptoms such as headaches and vomiting may also appear.
Why do we get dizzy like this?
Think of it this way: our body's balance is like a team sport. Our eyes, brain, inner ear, and nerves in our legs and back all work together to keep us from falling. If there's even a slight problem in any part of this system, we start to feel dizzy.
There are many things that can cause dizziness.
| Reason category | Description and examples |
|---|---|
| Inner ear problems | Vertigo, inner ear infections (Labyrinthitis), Meniere's disease. |
| Heart disease and circulatory problems | Low blood pressure (Hypotension), heart attack, heart rhythm irregularities. |
| Other common causes | Dehydration, low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), iron deficiency (anemia), certain medications, stress, and concussion. |
Vertigo: Dizziness caused by a problem in the inner ear
If you feel like the whole room is spinning around you even though you're standing still, we call that condition Vertigo . This is a type of dizziness. Most often, it's caused by a problem in the inner ear.
- BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo): This is the most common cause of vertigo. Small pieces of calcium crystals in our inner ear get out of place and move to another place. This sends incorrect signals to our brain about our balance. This dizziness comes on suddenly when we turn our head, roll over in bed, or get out of bed. This is not dangerous, and most of the time it goes away on its own. Your doctor can teach you some simple exercises to put those calcium crystals back in their place.
- Meniere's Disease: This condition causes an increase in fluid in the inner ear. This can cause severe vertigo that lasts for hours. It can also cause symptoms such as pressure in the ear, ringing in the ears, and hearing loss.
- Inner Ear Infections: A viral infection can cause severe vertigo due to swelling of the nerves in the inner ear (vestibular neuritis or labyrinthitis).
Is heart disease also a cause of dizziness?
Yes, sometimes dizziness can be an early sign of heart disease. For example, when cholesterol deposits in the blood vessels and blocks them (atherosclerosis), the amount of blood flowing to the brain decreases. This can cause dizziness.
If you experience palpitations along with dizziness, it could be a sign of heart disease. If you feel this way, see a doctor as soon as possible.
Low blood pressure (hypotension) is another major cause of dizziness. Our brain needs a constant supply of oxygen-rich blood to function properly. When blood pressure drops, the amount of blood flowing to the brain decreases, causing dizziness, blurred vision, and even fainting. This is especially common when you stand up suddenly from a sitting position .
Some other common causes of dizziness
Dehydration
Our bodies lose a lot of fluid every day through sweat, breathing, and urination. If we don't drink enough water, our blood pressure can drop and we can feel dizzy.
Some medications
Dizziness can be a side effect of some medications you take. This is especially true for medications for high blood pressure, depression, epilepsy, and some antibiotics. If you have any concerns, talk to your doctor about it.
Low blood sugar (Hypoglycemia)
People with diabetes may experience dizziness if their blood sugar levels suddenly drop. Along with this, symptoms such as sweating, trembling, and excessive hunger may also appear. Some people without diabetes can also experience this condition.
Concussion
Dizziness can also occur if you have a severe head injury, such as a concussion. This is an emergency. If you experience symptoms such as dizziness, vomiting, and blurred vision after a head injury, go to a hospital's Emergency Department (ETU) immediately.
Anxiety and Stress
Don't be surprised, excessive stress and anxiety can also cause various symptoms in the body. Dizziness is one of them.
Iron Deficiency Anemia
This condition is common among many people in our country, especially women. When there is not enough iron in the blood, the transport of oxygen throughout the body is impaired. This can cause symptoms such as dizziness, extreme fatigue, cold hands and feet, and difficulty breathing.
Warning signs that require immediate medical attention
Normal dizziness will go away on its own after a while. However, if dizziness is accompanied by any of the following symptoms, it may be a sign of a serious medical condition. In such a case, do not drive alone, but go to a hospital's Emergency Department (ETU) immediately.
| Warning Signs (Red Flags) - Go to the ETU immediately! | |
|---|---|
| ⚫ Sudden severe headache | ⚫ Chest pain or difficulty breathing |
| ⚫ Numbness or weakness on one side of an arm, leg, or face | ⚫ Difficulty speaking or slurring words |
| ⚫ Double vision or blurred vision | ⚫ Difficulty walking, loss of control |
| ⚫ Confusion or seizure | ⚫ Persistent vomiting |
Take-Home Message
- Dizziness is very common. It's not always something to be afraid of. However, it's not a good idea to ignore it either.
