Do you also suffer from hemorrhoids? (Hemorrhoids) Don't be shy about talking about it!

Do you also have this problem of hemorrhoids? Maybe it's after having a baby, or maybe it's due to constant constipation. This is really not something to hide and suffer from. Because this is a very common thing among us in Sri Lanka. Most of the time, this condition heals on its own in a week or two. But if it doesn't, your doctor is there to help you. So let's see what you can do to get rid of this pain, how to get rid of it.

Why do we get hemorrhoids?

Simply put, hemorrhoids are swollen blood vessels in and around your anus. It's similar to varicose veins in our legs. The main cause of this is excessive pressure on the veins in that area.

Think about it, sitting on the toilet for a long time, straining during childbirth, lifting heavy weights, chronic constipation or diarrhea can all cause this pressure. This can cause the blood vessels there to swell, creating a painful, itchy lump-like condition. Sometimes, you may even bleed a little while passing stool.

Things you can do at home to relieve this pain

There are a few simple things you can do at home as soon as this discomfort begins. These can provide you with great relief.

Boiling in hot water

This is the best and easiest thing to do. Fill a bathtub with some warm water and soak in it for about 15-20 minutes. Do this two or three times a day. Or you can buy a "sitz bath" from a pharmacy. This is a small basin that you can put over the toilet. When you sit in this with warm water, the pain, itching, and swelling will be greatly reduced.

Epsom salt

When you soak your feet in warm water, you can add some Epsom salt to the water to help reduce swelling even faster. Alternatively, you can make a compress with Epsom salt.

  • Take 2 tablespoons of Epsom salt.
  • Mix 2 tablespoons of glycerin into it.
  • Apply this mixture to a piece of gauze and place it on the hemorrhoids for about 15 minutes.
  • Repeat this every 4-6 hours.

Witch Hazel

This is an herbal lotion. You can find it at pharmacies. Soak a cotton ball in the lotion called `Witch Hazel` and apply it to the hemorrhoids. This will reduce inflammation, itching, and swelling. Some hemorrhoid creams and wipes also contain this substance.

Remember, wiping with regular toilet paper can increase the pain, so it's best to rinse with water or use medicated wipes.

If the pain is unbearable, you can take a painkiller like Paracetamol. But ask your doctor before taking medications like Aspirin or Ibuprofen, as these can sometimes increase bleeding.

Home treatments Description
Sitz bath with lukewarm water Sit in lukewarm water for 15-20 minutes, 2-3 times a day. This will reduce pain and itching.
Epsom Salt Adding it to hot water or mixing it with glycerin and applying it as a poultice reduces swelling.
Witch Hazel Liquid Soak a cotton ball in it and apply it to the infected area. This will help control inflammation and bleeding.
Ice Pack Wrap a few ice cubes in a clean cloth and place them on the painful area for 10-15 minutes. This will immediately reduce swelling and pain.

Changing these habits would be a big deal!

As important as treating hemorrhoids is preventing them from recurring, the key to this is controlling constipation.

  • Drink plenty of water: Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water a day. This will help prevent dry stools and make them easier to pass. Since things like coffee, tea, and alcohol dehydrate the body, it's best to limit them a bit.
  • Eat fiber-rich foods: Include fiber-rich foods in your diet. Eat greens like kale, spinach, and spinach, fruits like papaya and avocado, and grains like buckwheat, oats, and barley . These help soften stools and make them easier to pass. If necessary, your doctor may recommend a fiber supplement like psyllium husk .
  • Exercise: Do simple exercises like walking for at least 30 minutes a day. This can help improve bowel function and prevent constipation.
  • Don't put off going to the toilet: Go to the toilet as soon as you feel the need to defecate. If you put it off, the stool will become even drier and harder to pass later.
  • Correct posture: When using the commode, place something like a small bench under your legs. This will keep your knees slightly higher than your hips, which will help keep the stool straight and make it easier to defecate.

Don't be afraid, talk to a doctor.

Many people are embarrassed to talk about this issue, but this is not something to suffer from in secret.

If you have tried home treatment for a week or two and the pain is getting worse, if you are bleeding excessively, or if you are having difficulty performing daily tasks, you should definitely see your doctor.

Don't be afraid that you will have to go for surgery right away just because you found a doctor. Most of the time, this condition can be controlled by finding out what small changes are in your lifestyle and eating habits and advising on them. Perhaps your mental stress, increased work, and disordered eating habits are also affecting this. The doctor will explain all of this to you.

Remember, you're not the only one with this problem. Many people have this problem. This is normal for doctors. So don't be shy or afraid to talk about your problem and get the right advice and treatment.
