What is life really like with twins? - A mother's story (Life With Twins)

Are you expecting twins? Or are you thinking about it? Twins are a double blessing that comes to your home at once. But do we really talk about the challenges and hardships that come with that joy? Today we are going to talk about the story of a mother named Maureen who faced such an experience. Through her story, we will try to understand what life is really like with twins .

Maureen's story: Twins after IVF

Maureen Downey and her husband Bo Emerson already had two children. They were considering a third child, but Maureen suffered several miscarriages. So they decided to turn to a new fertility treatment, IVF (In-Vitro Fertilization), to have a child.

Maureen was 42 at the time. Doctors implanted two embryos in her uterus. They didn't really want twins, but they thought it would be nice if they did. "For someone who hasn't had children before, it's understandable that they'd want twins because it might be their only chance," Maureen says. "But we only wanted a third child. So I didn't think I wanted twins. But I was hoping that both embryos would be okay."

Is being pregnant with twins different than expected?

Maureen says her pregnancy went smoothly, without any major complications. That means she didn't have to stay in bed. However, she had to quit her job much earlier than with her previous two pregnancies. She also had to face a lot of new things that she had never experienced before.

"I had heartburn that I had never experienced before. The first time it happened, I thought I was having a heart attack. It was so bad. I also had a lot of little aches and pains all over my body. To be honest, the last month and a half of pregnancy was incredibly tiring and tiring. I didn't feel like this when I was having my first two children."

Usually, when you have twins, the uterus enlarges, putting more pressure on the abdominal organs. This can cause chest pain, difficulty breathing, and body aches. If you are experiencing these symptoms, it is best to talk to your doctor about it.

What happened after the babies were born?

At 39 weeks, close to full term, Maureen delivered Rebecca and Joey by scheduled C -section. Although she thought everything had gone well, Maureen faced more complications than she had anticipated after the birth.

Her uterus was not contracting properly, so she started bleeding profusely. This condition is called Postpartum Hemorrhage .

"Things after the babies were born were more complicated than I expected. I think I lost about a third of the blood in my body. I went home too weak to walk, and severely anemic."

This type of heavy bleeding is a medical emergency. In Sri Lanka, in such cases, a patient is immediately admitted to the Emergency Treatment Unit (ETU) and given the necessary treatment.

Maureen says it took her a full year to regain her strength and health, which gives you an idea of how weak she must have been.

The first year: a harder time than expected

Maureen says she's no novice at raising children. Having raised two children before, she had everything ready before bringing the twins home. The baby's room, clothes, and other necessary items were all in order.

"The first night we came home from the hospital, we thought we had everything we needed. The clean clothes were neatly arranged in the drawers. But that first night, the babies were so wet and vomited so many times that we had to tear the tags off the new clothes in the boxes and put them on. We were not prepared for that at all."

It was a big surprise for Maureen. She says, "I had to raise my bar a lot in terms of how difficult this job was."

"That first year is like a dream in my memory. On the one hand, there was no one to help me. On the other hand, it was a huge shock to my body, which had lost a lot of blood and was weak. On top of that, it was very tiring at that time, with breastfeeding both of us."

Opportunity to experience Maureen's experience (with twins)
Pregnancy period Unprecedented chest pains and physical aches. Much more tiring than a single pregnancy.
After childbirth Loss of one-third of the body's blood due to excessive bleeding (hemorrhage) and severe anemia.
The time it took for the body to heal It took a full year to regain strength.
First year experience It's twice as much work as you think. It's a completely exhausting time with no sleep, no one to help, and no one to turn to.

Is life with twins like a 'circus'?

Maureen says she likes a noisy, restless environment.

"If you think your family is best served by just one child , twins can be a big change for you. They're like their own little 'traveling circus' ."

"They're very loud. Everything is complicated. Especially when the babies are young, it's very difficult to go to the store, to put two in car seats, to keep both of us in the car. My husband and I are both a little used to the noise. But when a friend who only has one child comes to my house, I've seen them jump. I think it's because we have four children at home. But most of the noise comes from the twins."

Maureen's story shows us that twins are both a blessing and a challenge that tests parents' patience, strength, and support for each other to the fullest.
