What Is Ideal Body Weight?
Ideal body weight (IBW) refers to the weight range associated with optimal health outcomes for a given height. Multiple clinical formulas have been developed over the decades — primarily for drug dosing and nutritional assessment in healthcare settings. Today, they serve as useful reference points for personal health goals.
The Four Main Formulas
- Hamwi (1964): Men: 48 kg + 2.7 kg per inch above 5ft. Women: 45.4 kg + 2.25 kg per inch above 5ft. Widely used in clinical settings.
- Devine (1974): Men: 50 + 2.3 kg per inch over 5ft. Women: 45.5 + 2.3 kg per inch over 5ft. Originally for drug dosing.
- Robinson (1983): Men: 52 + 1.9 kg per inch over 5ft. Women: 49 + 1.7 kg per inch over 5ft. Based on Metropolitan Life Insurance data.
- Miller (1983): Men: 56.2 + 1.41 kg per inch over 5ft. Women: 53.1 + 1.36 kg per inch over 5ft. Closer to the lower end of healthy BMI.
⚕️ Medical Disclaimer: Ideal body weight formulas are population estimates and may not reflect optimal weight for individuals with unusual body composition, muscle mass, or health conditions. A healthy BMI range (18.5–24.9) is generally the most useful practical goal.
